the steering on my 73' locks when i accelerate hard and the nose lifts. as soon as i let off, i can turn the wheel. everything underneath is greased and tight. i just have no idea what to do or what to look for. thanks in advance!
i have no idea where to look, maby its the idler arm being pulled and binding. i have no idea where to look.
no, everything's fine. i have the baby straight six. the front rides very high because i took alot of weight out of the bumper and added a bunch behing the rear axle. it only does it when you launch hard and the nose rises. its wierd
its not in the column im pretty sure. its not a sudden lock either, it gets tight quick, but it a progressive thing. im pretty sure something is binding but i have no idea what
Even if the mounts aren't broken, they could be flexing enough to push something into the linkage somewhere. I would have someone torque the engine and look for something hitting the steering linkage, possibly around the center link or pitman arm. You could use a floor jack to lift the front while you do this. JUST STAY OUT FROM UNDER IT OR IN FRONT OF IT IF YOU DO!! Would hate to see you get hurt.
Header close to steering? twisting motor mounts just enough to make contact? Not sure if its even that way, never really looked under the hood of a 6 cyl mav. I would do as merc stated and try jacking up to simulate it, also maybe try twisting motor as well. Closest thing is probably your problem.
i tried, but its hard to get the right ride height right, and it only locks when i turn, so i cant reproduce the forces when the car is stationary
im gonna try replacing the bushings and all that jazz where the steering mechanism connects to the car itself.
