My mav is still shutting off when I stop and leave it in gear it will run fine in neutral or in park just not when it's in gear. It is shifting automatically now because I replaced the torque converter. I just replaced the plugs and wires and I have rebuilt the carb about 3 times now. I think it could be a vacuum leak but I have no idea how to test that or how to fix or if that's even the problem. School starts Monday and I really need to have it fixed by then.

Put a vacuum gauge on it and see what it is at idle.
Also whats your idle rpm? In park and gear if possible

Vacuum leak can be tested by using gauge, propane, starting fluid, brake cleaner, and visual inspection (off the top of my head). Gauge, and visual inspection the safe methods. Other methods are highly flammable.

If lines look dry, cracked, or brittle, just do yourself a favor now and replace them. Other leaks will show up on gauge or the flammable method.

sounds like the valve body in the tranny is locking up.

another possible vacuum leak is the spacer under the carb that the pcv line goes into.

    If it's a V8.

The mav is gone but i'm still here!
If you have power brakes check the check valve on the booster.

I had a leak there once and it took forever to find.

It really sounds like you need to take this to a mechanic. I know you have tinkered and messed with this problem all summer long.

using a squirt bottle of water is the safe way to find a vacuum leak. when the water hits the leak it will seal it momentarily. the rpms will change when you spray the bad area.
