Good Morning forum, I finally getting my V8 swap done, motor an trans are mounted and engine turns over,a 2 year adventure is close to the end. I am stumped on getting my engine to fire, I am using an MSD electronic distributor-pn/8584 with the coil. I am not using the MSD box(street car only). I have three ignition wires that were used from my old I6 engine set-up, they are a red wire which I have on the positive side of my coil and a red and white and a yellow and red wire. Should I be using either of these other wires on the negative side of the coil post. Also there is a fourth wire that is on this ignition cluster of wires, it is black but has a tan colored 90 degree plug or adapter. Where should it be plugged into? Also there are two wires coming off the distributor, black and orange and black and gray that has 2 pin plug in it should they be used? Thanks for the help, TonyJ

Easiest answer, go to msd website and print off the correct wiring diagram.

That distributor will require an MSD ignition box.

Your stock ignition was a points type system which is simpler from a design standpoint.

If im not mistaken there should be a red wire from the harness thats the iginition. The other two should be the water tempature gauge and the oil pressure gauge. By looking up this distributor it shows that it must be used with a msd ingition box. You will need to purchase a msd 5520 or something similiar.

Thanks guys for the input, the distributor came with the engine when I bought it. I had a feeling that I was going to have to go with the control box and thought I could get away without buying one. I value you the perspectives of the people in this forum. Is there a electronic distributor I can use and not have to go with the control box? Thanks, TonyJ

OK so that distributor is close to $400, why not just spend $200 and get an MSD box and use the distributor you already have.
