Sorry to make a useless thread but I need some answers that I cant really find and its the easiest simplest thing. Well I was underneath my car the other day and noticed that for some odd reason my gas tank is looking rusty on the top, like rusty to the point that its going to break through soon, idk why. I know its the original tank but I didnt think a gas tank would get to that point. Well my plans are to forget about another stock tank and putting a 15 Gallon fuel cell in it. I was thinking of cutting out trunk and making it sit really low so I dont loose out on so much trunk space. Like have the tank only sitting a couple inches above the floor of the trunk and have the rest of the tank outside. I dont mind opening my trunk everytime to fill up so thats no problem for me. And was thinking of buying a cell with a sending unit already installed, ill just wire up to the stock sending unit pug to the new plug. Question is the motor still has orginal mechanical fuel pump, so obviosly no retun line. So how would that work with the tank? Just block one fitting on the sump and have just the feed line? And also I can just hook up to stock fuel line right? And the other is whats the best way to vent the cell? Thanks in advance
Your mounting method will work fine. Make sure you get a fuel level sending unit for ford. Most are for GM. Just cap off the un used out let on the sump. There will be a vent fitting on the top of the cell. I ran a line up as high as I could in the trunk then back down and to the out side. This I so the fuel won't slosh out when the cell is full. Usually the return port is on the top also. Just cap it off. Make sure you seal the trunk floor some how or you will get alot of exhaust in the car.
so the vent just dump it out of the car, thats it? leave it hanging out? and whats the diffence between Ford sending unit and GM sending unit? I couldnt just splice and solder new plugs?
on the vent you can put a fuel filter on the end of the vent hose to keep dirt from geting in if you feel like it or you can even use a really small k&n filter. the difference in the fuel sending units is the resistance scale that they operate under. gm is 0-90 ohms and ford has two different ones depending on what year it is. i think that the maverick is 70-10 ohms but im not sure. i did a quick google search and didnt find a definite answer. it would be best to measure what the resistance of your stock one is to ensure you get the correct one. and yes you will have to cut the end off the stock wiring to attach to the new sending unit
I've got a 12 gallon cell with a maverick sending unit installed, I will be in daytona at the end of this month if your interested, I've also got a pretty clean stock tank I could bring either with me
the autometer sending unit I bought for ford is the closest I could get short of the programmable ones but it's not accurate. It reads over full when the tank is full and it reads empty when I have 4 gallons. But it's doable. One thought (totally just my opinion) is that you might get tired of opening the trunk up all the time. You might not, it might not be a big deal.
well im planning on doing this like next week or less since my tank doesnt look good at all and it is my daily driver so I dont want to take a chance. But thanks though
well my stock one is all screwed up anyways, the same thing, it reads empty when I really have a few gallons left and it reads super full when its filled up and as for the opening the trunk everytime. I know I will get tired of it so for the meanwhile it'll stay like that until I have someone make me a filler neck to the stock location since I dont have a welder or anything to do it myself
19 Gallon fuel cell....I left the return capped and it is vented through a fitting by the rear bumper bolts....Has a GM sender but i'm using Autometer gauges so it works fine....With a stock gauge you would have to change the sender....Has to fab up mounting which did require welding....Yes i have to open the trunk to fill but no big deal
and that's a problem...I set mine that way...when it hits empty there is 2 gals. left... ...haven't ran out of gas so far...
