Ok so i have an exhaust leak with my 72 maverick im working with but other than that it runs ok. My issue is the plate on top of the one barrel carb (i believe is a newer model carb, i6 200 engine). If it is open as in the black cover is loosened so the spring inside is not engaged the car runs. if i close it while it is running it will die. Any ideas? should it be open or closed while running?

That plate is called the choke butterfly, it sopposed to be closed when the engine is cold, then slowly opens as the engine warms up, if you close it completly when the engine is running, you're choking it to death.
