Ok, I have been trying to find a older thread for the last hour that was discussing what to look for when buying a used t5 transmission. I would like to know because i am looking at gettting one. thanks
Mileage on the original motor. If possible make sure gears don't grind. should be a fluid movement when going in and outta gears. Check the fluid if it's outta the car to make sure it's not really bad. it should not be like pudding. should look just a little thcker then your motor oil when you change it. If it's too thick could indicate bad maintenance. Now for what year to get. out of the mustangs i know there are two kinds. the 3.55 first gear, adn the 2.79 first gear... the 2.79 can handle more power, it's of the older variety, believe 85 is the year they switched, but don't quote me. And that's all that i know about em... and que the next semi informative post.
i have found that most used t5s will have a grinding problem with second gear. when i rebuild them, will replace the second gear driven gear and the selector ring. what happens is the teeth on these components get rounded off and that is what causes the grinding. so when buying a used t5 expecialy out of a 5.0 mustang, it will have been driven hard and abused, budget to rebuild it with a new second gear and selector ring.
You also want to make sure its a WC T5 Here is a good breakdown of the difference between the WC and NWC gear boxes taken from http://www.moderndriveline.com/
If you roll it half way around there is still some teeth on the other side, that was a cobra cluster too, oh well it lasted 5 years and most of it was at the track.
ya good thinking, went and checked one out, tag was missing but it ended up being a 4cyl t5 sigh... oh well but i did get to see a 1000hp motor when i was there....electric motor that is. The guy said it was just a small one and that they were in the process of build a 5000hp one
