when you get a new OLD car and it has been sitting for only God knows how long. the best time to open the floor vents, for the first time, is NOT when you are cruising down the interstate at 75 mph :slap:

    Experiencially speaking, are we?

No actual first hand knowledge, but a good friend of mine once said the same thing about discovering you have a worn and rusty hood latch.

Amazing what collects up in the cowls of these cars. No wonder they rotted out so bad.

hehehe. I've had that experience more than once!
Nothing quite like powdered leaves, dirt and mystery grunge ground into a freshly cleaned and vacuumed carpet!

I remember the first time I did that in my first car, a 56 chevy,,got crap in my eyes and stuff. Think I have only done it bout 15 times since,, just enough time goes by that I forget bout it. Pretty funny.

Thanks for the heads up John. I'm really close to getting my 4 door on the road, and was looking at the floor vents the other day, wondering if they would still work. So what would you say is a "safe" speed in which the vents should be opened without major visual impairment?

Its really funny.....I drove it to Dave's for the cookout and never thought about opening it.....thats because the screw/bolt that holds the "puller, thingie door opener ma-jigor" had come out and it was hanger down by the floor boards. I installed a new radio and some speakers in the kick panels before I drove it to Mizzo. So I put a screw/bolt back in it...ready for action! Of course I had the carpets really clean and the car was looking good.....on the inside. I guess we was in Illinios and I thought...hey lets open that vent!:slap:

Lets just say it was a good thing it was a sunny day and I had my shades on
First reaction was to shut it....which I did. Then after surveying the MESS, I decided what the heck, lets just get all the stuff out of it......so open the vent back up......when stuff stopped flying out, I would give it a little more pedal. Did that until 90 or so and figured that the Illinios police were probably like the police here in KY......they would not understand my reasoning behind it:rolleyes: so slowed it down and continued to have stuff fly out of it for the next, what seemed to be 1,000 miles :D

And I am glad I am not the only silly nilly to have done this(y)

it's too early to be laughing this hard. pure entertainment. but seriously, i'm glad i read this before i got my car going down the road. i'm sure i'll probably forget about it until my first test drive... then i'll probably be driving along and open the thing, then get a big chunk of some nasty crap in my eye, and i'll never be fit to drive again!!! considering it's my favorite thing to do...

What gets me is how many times it takes to get it all out. Mines not a daily driver but gets driven a good bit and I dont think it will ever all come out. Until I get off my lazy rear and take it all apart and clean it out manually anyway. Anybody got any quick tips for getting it all out short of removing dash, cowl etc?
