c4 to toploader swap question

    I'm in the process of gathering all the parts needed to swap my inline 6 (250) Maverick from a C4 to a Toploader manual. I bought a set of pedals that also came with a strait six zbar, linkages, and a frame side pivot mount. The engine side pivot assembly is one of the few parts that I still need to begin the job. Does anyone know if an early mustang pivot mount will work? I found a kit on the Autokrafters mustang catalog for $16 but I'd like to know for sure if it'll work before ordering (I've spent enough money on parts I can't use)

    I would say it will, but not 100% on that. One other question I have for you is, which Toploader are you using ? Do you have the tag numbers for it ? Reason I ask is the 390 Toploaders use a small block input shaft, but it's about 5/8" shorter than the other small block Toploaders. Using one with a small block bell will not work due to the input not reaching into the pilot bearing?bushing. Just something to be aware of.

    Thanks for the heads up. I actually bought 2 transmissions from a ad I found on craigslist. The guy sold them to me as a package deal for $200. One of them is a 3 speed and the others a 4 speed. when I ran the id tag of the 3 speed it showed that it was on a 67/68 Mustang 289. The 4 speeds tag is missing but the input shaft is exactly like the 3 speeds shaft. I hope to be able to use the 4 speed on my project but it looks like it was damaged on the right side where the tranny bolts to the bell housing. Someone tried to repair it by welding a 1/2 inch steel rod around the edge that was damaged, but didn't do such a great job and I don't think it'll line up with the bell housing without some work. Oh well, the Grabber that I had back in my high school days had a 3 speed in the floor and I loved it so I guess I can live without a 4th gear. I only plan on driving the car locally on the weekends anyway, and even a 3 speeds better than an automatic.:tiphat:

    You can buy a new main case for the Toploader (or a used one as well) and swap the guts out between the two cases. David Kee sells new toploader main cases www.4speedtoploaders.com These transmissions are easy to take apart and put back together. David Kee will furnish step by step instructions to do this job. I've done two, with nothing fancier than a hammer and a good punch. One of those I did was broken in the same way yours is. Bought a case off ebay for $125 and swapped the guts. Paid $75 for the broken Toploader. Ended up selling the repaired transmision to David Kee for $400
