Hey. My car has a lot of trouble getting started up. It usually starts and dies several times before I can keep it running. Do you think it's my carb, or....? Any testing tips for it or advice?

Does it only do it when the engine is cold?

A little bit of both. I can turn it off for 5 mins and have trouble getting it started again. It's definitely worse when the engine is cold though. I also, part of the time, have a problem, no idea what the cause is but every once n a while when I turn my car off it blows off air under the hood. It kinda sputters and spits. Not sure what it is or if it's bad I just know it doesn't sound right.

For a cold start are you following the "cold start sequence"? Press accelerator all the way to the floor (This sets the idle advance and closes the choke butterfly), turn key until engine starts. Do not touch the accelerator until the car starts. Let it run at the higher idle for a while then press the accelerator again. This will disengage the idle advance.

As far as starts after the engine is warmed up you may have a malfunctioning choke? That choke (if original) is most likely controlled by a metal heat pick-up tube tied into the exhaust manifold that heats up a metal coil and slowly opens it up as engine temp increases.

This sounds like it might be popping back through the carb which would be the timing is off or a missfire

most likely carb adjustments are out of wack, but a weak ignition coil can cause these symptoms also.
if you choke is closing when the motor is cold and opens as the motor starts and heats up then i would be looking at trying a new or different coil

That just sounds like old school run on from cheap gas, You turn the key off and the engine continues to spit a sputter and then when it finally does cut of it lets out a Ssssppppheeeewsh. This can also be fix by retarding the timng just a hair to prevent pinging/detonation.

Not sure how to check choke and timing. And as far as cheap gas goes, what do you reccomend I run on?

with engine cold...remove the breather. with your hand, give the carb some gas. if choke is operating correctly the butterfly in the top of the carb. should close...:yup:

Ha. I never have time anymore. Never had gas before. I'm a busy boy!

Will try that whenever I wake up. About to go crash just got home from work and engine is warm. Ik I've done that before but can't remember if itwas closing.

Just a thought ,Make sure that the carb is not loose on the engine mounting bolts, and twist the carb by hand to make sure the carb is not vibrating apart from driving. This is a common six cyl. carb. problem that you have to check yearly. Hope this helps.:chirp:(y)
