ok... the car is 70 non ac so it has the circle vent cut outs on both side this i know. but the car was converted to ac by my father before his passing.. now this piece below.. http://www.1bad6t.com/Maverick/repair/diagrams/untitled140.gif my father never had that in the car.... idk what he had to cover that hole from the cowl... but its been raining past few days.. and my computer wiring harness wasnt happy haha... lucky nothin major.... but any solutions???
If you are getting water in the car you have cowl rust issues and it doesn't sound like any fun to fix.
its not really leaking... its dry all the way across... the water is only coming through that cowl hole with four bolts around it, that the vent hat fixture goes on. lol
The vent in the pic doesn't have a top. It open so air, or in your case water, can come through. Sounds like you have a bad cowl. The hat is inside the cowl
http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=35489&garpg=5 lol now that ive read this article... btw very well done craig!! now back to the hats. okay there the metal rims up in the cowl.. both of mine are perfectly fine... said the friend from the body shop who did all the body work an paintjob, less then a year ago.. & ive felt the inside of the rims before i installed the dash.. no holes... but im tempted to do a poor test with a bucket... slowly!! lol
You are welcome....glad I could help. Sounds like you need to do the water test. You will need to put something over that hole....like the vent assembly...or you will have air rushing in that hole all the time. The vent assembly would have a flapper door on it to cut off the outside air.
I had to repair mine last year by removing the cowl top and using Mustang reproduction stuff - I had a few apparent holes rotted through, which initially helped me to make the decission to go into this repair. What I also found, after taking a wire wheel to the entire inside of the cowl, was the hidden pin holes at the bottom of corrosion areas. These are the ones that you will not "feel with your fingers".
I have two complete cowl panels cut from 1970 Mavs. Both are rust free. PM me if you have any interest. View attachment 52093 View attachment 52094 View attachment 52095 View attachment 52096 View attachment 52097 Rick
If your vents are the only thing eaten up (once you get the top off). Head to your local lowes/home depot/ what have you...and go to where they carry stove pipes and get the right size. Easy to cut, and weld around or in place of the old vent.
I don't know who came up with the word "Hats" I guess the same guy who came up with the name “Squirrel Cage”...I would had called the “Hats” a “Collar” and “Squirrel Cage” a “Hamster Wheel”. Ever see a squirrel running around inside one?
Rich; try this. Look at the water lines from the heater, and see if they are sealed to the firewall. I had that problem, with a newly fixed cowl, and it was the heater hose lines leaking, and running along the firewall and all the stuff in there, and dripping on the package tray. There are grommets to make the seal, or make your own. Take a look and see if they are good. Hope this helps you out!
I res tored mine last week, No leaks. I just had to know what was going on under there. After seeing some of the project pics, Im glad I did. Before and after Sand Blasting. I rust treated them, sealed them, Primed with weld through primmer and painted them with apliance epoxy to match the color Ill be painting the car. Its alot of work, but worth the piece of mind.
