Thanks for shareing what you have shared already. I guess in the future I will just loose the towers and do the MII setup with headers..
The Doug Thorley's were made using my car as a template. A bone stock '72 power steering car with automatic floor shifter. Jamie had put out a request for either a column shift car or a manual trans car but didn't get anyone who could deliver their car up as a test mule. I watched what was tried to make these fit as wide a target market as possible. Considerations included clearance of the bellhousings, z-bar, stock oil pans, power steering components, manual steering compnents, firewall, starter, frame rails, etc. Everything is a compromise when building headers for our cars. The bellhousing to firewall distance really isn't adequate for 2.5" pipes without very careful bending. The clearance between the engine block and the pitman arm is a similar challenge as the logical solution is to move the down tube closer to the oil pan. Problem with that is increased oil temp, etc. The best fitting set of headers for our cars that I have found is a set of Tri-y's from Doug Thorley. But my car hasn't been lowered as much as many other peoples cars have been. Simple fact is that even custom headers are a compromise and very expensive as well. As to the DT header and the Hedman headers being identical, there are quite a few fairly major differences in tubing size, angles, bolt hole access, spark plug access, etc. Put them side by side and measure. I have. Long tubes bring the torque curve down where it will be felt more on a stock motor. Since what you "feel" is torque, you may or may not notice that the car seems "lazy" or lost power. That is a trade off when you select headers. It won't be much but it may seem significant because of the stock motor and the RPMs where you would notice it. Sort of like the princes who "felt" the pea under 100 mattresses. Okay, that's not really fair. After watching header fitment problems with every persons build for the past 10 years or more, I have come to the conclusion that no two people are going to have the same problems or solutions with their unique combination.
I agree. And being that I like long tubes, it will be wonderful to get them towers out of the way. Doing so should allow them to be installed easier, shouldn't it?
I would like to see a pic of those....I am about to do this install in a month or so. I have the Hedman 88408's. I am hoping like heck that they will fit perfectly ( I know dreaming) or maybe a flexable down pipe?
