Okay can someone tell me what you use to secure the remote mirror to the door? I have the ring that you see and a small inner ring that is on the door: but what goes on the backside/inside of the door frame that keeps the joystick from flopping forward or into the passenger compartment of the car? Seems there should be a ring or retainer of sorts on the inside of the door. Is it a slide U-shaped retainer like what is used on the door and trunk locks?
I have a '72 if that makes any difference.
Thanks in advance for your help.

The flat metal washer with the tab on it goes on the joystick first, then it is inserted into the door hole with the tab lined up with the elongated slot in the door hole. Then the outer screw on bezel to hold it all together.

Variants of these washers can be grabbed from other Fords, too. I found a huge one in a mid-70s LTD or Galaxie. I still have it here somewhere.

I think that some cars came with that little tab built into the sheet metal in the door too.... part of the stamped hole (not completely round). Trying to remember if that might have been my 71 Torino that was like that.

I looked for the odd one out of the LTD that is here somewhere ...no dice.

Potentially, a piece made from sheet metal could do the trick, or a large washer with that tab spot welded or epoxied could git-er-done. You just need to trap the barrel and keep it from spinning. The large threaded collar on the outside of the door is what really keeps it in place.

The flat inside the hole keeps the controll lined up so up is up and dowm is down etc...
