My dad passed away two years ago today. He used to take me to the salvage yards with him from time to time when I was younger, and boy did I love it! So with that in mind, & with me being off of work and the young ones out of school, I figured it would be a good day to take them for the first time. Plus I knew of one here in town that had an old 4 door Maverick, and I wanted to take the sending unit out of it before I tried taking the non-working unit out of mine. Who knows, maybe the sending unit in it would be worth taking home.
On the way I explained to my 4 year old son what a salvage yard was for, that there were all kinds of old cars parked and people went in and took off the old parts that they needed and then paid for them. He was immediately concerned about Bessie, our 74 Maverick that that we were in. "No dad, what if someone tries to take parts off of Bessie while we're looking at other cars!?" Not sure if that was an insult to Bessie or not.....
Anyway, the old Mav was in sad shape, but I did take off the sending unit. No luck, it was a rusty mess. I did appreciate the experience though. Just got to figure out what to do about getting hold of a working unit. Any ideas?

The mav is gone but i'm still here!
That's awesome! My brother has always wanted to go to the junkyard, but over here you have to be 18 to get in.

I always take home all the toys I find in the cars though, puts a smile on his face!

As for the sending unit guys have had luck with 65-68 mustang/cougar ones.
They're available new and very affordable.

You can get a brand new sending unit for a Maverick from Auto Krafters.

Thanks Craig, it has been ordered. Looking forward to getting it in, as well as my Pertronix points replacement.

Spent a good part of my highschool education time in junk yards. Lots of good parts to be found back in the 80's. I wont list the good ones cause its depressing how little I sold them for back then. The list did include a boss 302 out of an eliminator....:cry:
