I recently bought a bunch of rusty grabber parts from a guy up in Tennessee. One of the things he threw in was a small rear bumper with a Drawtite trailer hitch bolted to it. It looks like a fairly sturdy little hitch as it bolts to the bumper as well as the frame. I never really thought about using the Maverick to tow stuff but I wonder if it would handle a teardrop camper? I think a slick little Maverick pulling a teardrop would look way cool tooling down the back roads of Florida.
Hell I would pull it down the front roads of Florida!! Front beach road seems to be ideal during spring break at that.
mine bolts to the rear of the car (behind the bumper) and to the front of the trunk pan...I don't think the bumper could take much...toungue weight. http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=78075&highlight=hitch
I saw a cool lightweight set up at a swap meet last year behind a street rod. The guy had a flat trailer like the one behind Patches, it had small tubular inserts welder at each corner. He had a couple totes straped down on it. When the guy got parked, he had a pop up tent in one of the totes that fit the trailer and the flexable poles stuck into the inserts.
I'd say a lightweight aluminum tear drop would probably be your best bet. Like Frank said, toungue weight would have to be kept pretty low, probably 300 lbs or less.
The hitch has 200 lb max tongue weight and what looks like 1000 lb max total weight stamped into the metal near the tongue. I'm not sure what the average teardrop trailer weighs, but I'm sure the Maverick could handle one.
Trailer Life unfortunetly I do not have the entire write-up but it gave the Maverick favorable reviews for towing. The crazy thing is this was the 1970 Maverick with the 200 -I6 and the smaller drum brakes
not according to trailer life magazine. They said the little maverick did really well towing that camper/trailer. I honestly do not think I would want to do it, but they said they did and it worked very nicely..... Hope they used the 3 speed manual and the 3:00 gears.
on top gear they hauled over 1,000lbs of manure in the back of a wore out mav. It should handle pulling a trailer.
yea your right. Not sure what holds up the small bumper as opposed to the big bumper mavs. big bumper mavs IMO could handle some light towing though
