Stopped at a salvage yard today after noticing a maverick sitting by itself.

77' model, 2 door, bucket seats, 250 with ac. Non running motor behind a c4 auto.

The front drivers side fender was roached, the drivers door needed swapped, the hood looked like it was in a salt bath its entire life.

From the rear windows back the car looked flawless though. Good for parts to me.

Nothing on it was for sale (This being a salvage yard mind you) Guy wanted $1800, and wouldn't come down. :biglaugh:

I said, "Its a ford maverick...I guarantee I'm the first person who stopped and asked to buy it."
    ...but he didn't care.

I feel bad having to let some of these cars rot away into the ground

that's ridiculous. There's a red Maverick that I considered buying and the guy just wouldn't come off of $4,000. It was worth 3, maybe, and it had a 302 and was running. So it still sits in his yard and he posts the car ever 2 weeks on Craigslist.

There was a big bumper Grabber here that was listed on CL for 10K. It was a good project car, needed paint and interior work. I called thinking it was a typo and the guy tells me it's a classic and worth every penny of 10 grand!

I know the feeling...I stopped by a used car dealer on the way home from work last month, he had an early 60s polaris and a 4dr 76 mav. I looked at the mav. he said "its funny I thought the polaris would get the attention to bring people in, but they all want to look at the maverick" its rusted out and beat, just a donor, but he wanted 850.00. It wont sell at that price and rather than come down hell sellit for scap. What an IDIOT.

$850 is not a REAL bad price. I used to buy parts cars for $200. Now it takes $500 or it goes straight to the crusher. I will buy any running Maverick for $500....sight unseen.

Any interest prompts the owners to serve as wonderful aggravators - even though there's little or no sentimental value whatsoever. It's simply greed.

They seem to think that if a base Chevelle sells for 20-30 then a Maverick should too!

I told the guy I payed $1,000 for my 2 door and had to rebuild the transmission and swap heads, bought my 4 door for $1,200 and it was nearly mint, and gave $100 for a 4 door shell.

He told me all of those were steals and I was lucky.

I replied, "Yes they were good deals but I didn't get lucky 3 times...thats what these things go for." :D

You might be surprised what I have bought and "drug" home. :D

This car had been sitting for well over 20 years. I had to bring home the tree growing in the front fender (see picture). I couldn't open the doors, so I cut a hole in the passenger door to get it to open. (4) flat tires. Why? Car was a 3-speed manual tranny with floor shift and manual steering. Clutch pedals, no shifter column, floor shift parts, manual steering parts, and more.

We have a yard in my area ( owner is a good friend ) where they refuse to crush anything older than 1980 until every last part is used. He has a small bumper Comet that I'm gonna check out on Monday. I can probably buy the car for $500, take what I need ( left rear quarter & top skin ), then sell the rest back to him for scrap price. He still won't crush it, just put it back where it came from. He's a good man!

We used to have yards like that around here...but then the price of steel went up....way up. So all the old cars went bye-bye.

I think metal scrap prices are the problem. With the Chinese buying up steel everywhere, old cars are being crushed and melted down all over. Sad.
