Looking for some help in regards to chaning my 72 Comet from a 8 inch rear to a 9 inch posi. Is there any car i should look at specificly for the rear axle? Any help would be great!
Read this post and especially the last one http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=80610&highlight=rearend
The chart show the width of different years of cars that had a 9 inch rear end in them, Mavs and Comets had an 8 inch rear end that was 56.5 inches wide. The car with the closest measurement is a 57-59 Ranchero or station wagon and they are 57.25 wide. But a 65-66 Mustang and a 63-65 Fairlane are the same at 57.25 but good luck finding one of them. Lots of info on this site if you use the search forum. Why do you want a 9 inch anyway ? Unless you have a lot of horsepower you dont need one. 8 inch rearends will take quite a bit of power
I want one bc I want to turn it into a posi and to do that with an 8 inch is looking really expensive to find the center that I would need. Talking to a friend who restores old cars said just switching to a 9 would be cheaper bc their so common
Okay I see now, I guess the search is on then. Around my neck of the woods you can get a nine inch that will fit for $350.00 but it would not be a posi (careful using that word here as that is Chevy terminalogy) Then you would have to buy the center section for say another $500.00 or less used, I am sure if you search you will be able to find what you are looking for at a decent price but just prepaing you for what expenses could be, sorta makes that 8 incher not so expensive at $750.00
haha my bad lol my buddy has the center section for a 9 inch already, we would just need the gears and such so from what hes said i should be able to do everything under $400 from where im at...just gotta find an axle first!
My bad also I assumed you needed everything, well there you go the search is on. BTW I like your car I remember seeing it for sale a while back
Thanks! I got lucky that the guy who orignally posted pics of it on here had to take is down payment back because we had some strong storms here that did damage to his house. i didnt see his posts til a few weeks after i bought the car 2 days after he backed out lol
one of the members sell a direct fit 9" housing for our maverick (dont rember his name). with his housing you can use your 8" axles and brakes if they are 5 lug. then all you have to do is make sure your limited slip is 28 spline not 31 spline.
If you get an axle that is closer to 58" overall width, you can fit more tire out back with wheels that are still close to a factory offset ... keep the period look of the car without the tires being so close to the springs. Also, many Ford cars use the same width between spring perches, so you may luck out there.
