I'm restoring a 71 Comet for my brother. It has a 302 with power steering and a C4 automatic. What brands of headers are a DIRECT bolt in ?
    Thanks.

I think all the headers say floor shift only. Some have modified the linkage and gotten it to work. Do a search on that subject and see what comes up. Also you'll probably have to use a PS drop down bracket.:)

Matterick, did the Hedmans drop right in?

Did the Hedmans drop right in with the column shift? Do you have power steering?
    What model number are they?
    Thanks.

yes my car has power steering and i cant remember if i had to raise the motor a couple inches to put on one of the headers :hmmm: the only trouble i have is turning left but thats because of the size pipe (2.5in.) oh and the passenger side header points at the firewall so its a tough weld. i'll try and figure out what the part number is for it (y)

Doug Thorley shorty headers work with column shift, and power steering.

Matterick, explain the tough weld please

You said they point at the firewall and it's a tough weld. Can you please explain in detail what you mean and what the solution is?
(Doug T headers are $450. Looks like Hedmans are $150)

Both will need a P/S drop bracket
column shift will not clear w/o some mods, floor shift will work fine.

first off in these pics you can see theres a custom clamp and thats because i didnt have have the ball and socket joint that Hedman sells. i didnt really need it because my grandparents own a welding/exhuast/trailer hitch shop so we were able to make something ourselves. anyways, heres the best pics i could get. you can see that the exhuast pipe is gonna need a good bend right after it comes off the header to make it under the firewall. take it to a good welding shop they should be able to weld it up (y)

    We used Hedman's

I'm the original poster. Our end result was Hedman's long tube headers and a B&M Mega shifter with drop down power steering bracket. We put in cutouts, an X pipe after the headers and Summit brand turbo style mufflers under the rear seat area. We "rigged" an over the axle 2 1/2" 68 Mustang kit from Summit to work on the Comet.
We also installed a 20 gallon 68-69 Mustang gas tank to have room on each side for the dual exhaust pipes. We ran the pipes straight out the back under the valance panel ala 5.0 Mustangs.
All of this took A LOT of work. We did it without a hoist. Only could jack it up enough to get under it and do the work. It came out great, just was a ton of work... I do not care to do it again ... PITA.
I attached a few pictures of the set up.
I finished my brothers car restoration in Oct 2010. He has been hitting the shows and collecting trophies. He is very happy :)

Thanks to all that replied over the years...

What is the purpose of the X-pipe?
