My goal is to turn my stock rear end of my 72 Comet into a positive traction. My buddy said it would be cheaper switch it to a 9 inch rear positive traction. My just trying to find the best and cheapest way do make it a posi overall.
I put 3:80's and a new Traction Lock in my 8" for about $550.00....Lighter than the 9" too Did you have the stock 8 inch rear?
3.80 gears, tracloc and master rebuild kit: $650 delivered. http://www.ebay.com/itm/8-Ford-28-S...Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr&hash=item5adb2c0e55 Add Bryant's rebuild link, a Ford differential rebuild book (or ), some time and basic tools.
Drives great but if it's for an everyday driver without an overdrive, the 3:80's may be a little steep....Might be better with something closer to 3:25-3:50
IIRC, there can be a weight penalty of about 40 lbs, using a 9 inch vs an 8 inch. An 8 inch will stand up to a lot under a light car like ours if built right.
You should look into this http://www.richmondgear.com/powertrax/lockright.html or this http://www.richmondgear.com/powertrax/noslip.html you can do either one yourself with limited knowledge. I had NEVER seen the inside of a rearend before installing mine and I just followed the instructions that came with it and a couple added instructions from the internet and mine has been in for 2 years now and I have not been easy on it to say the least. BTW either of these install into a stock 8 inch rear.
