I bought an oil change for the maverick a couple weeks back, but since I don't drive it much, decided to put the oil in my truck. I was changing the oil today, I had 3 1-qt bottles, and a 5 qt bottle of Motorcraft Synthetic Blend. As I was adding the oil to the truck, I noticed that I had 2 qts of 10w-30 (my preferred oil), then a qt of 5w-20. I also noticed that the 5qt bottle was also 5w-20. I took the 5 qt bottle to walmart to swap it, but that was all they had on the shelf, which is most likely how I ended up with it. So, I decided to use it but add 1 qt lucas instead of the final qt. So, I have approximately 1 qt of 10w-30, then 6 qts 5w-20, and 1 qt lucas (whatever viscosity that is!) in the truck. So, how long can I drive this before the engine tosses a rod?
In reality, I understand that this will most likely not hurt the engine. For instance, when you add lucas to the oil, you are already mixing viscosities. So what is the difference between adding a third one? But, still, I would like to hear opinions from others.
About 5 minutes. Not gonna hurt a thing, I have mixed different weights and brands of oil many times. Not a big fan of mixing synthetic and dino oils though, but it probably won't hurt it. As long as the oils don't fight each other and foam up, it should be fine. I'd rather have a blend of different oils than a dry crankcase any time!
The Lucas is advertised as pure dino, and the Motorcraft is a synthetic blend, but I think I read that it is only 5% or so synth, the rest is dino. I just added the lucas to up the viscocity closer to the 10w-30 I usually run. Of course, I like lucas, and use it in both my cars' differentials, and in the maverick engine oil.
Too much thinking for me lol. I been using OReiley brand High Mileage 5-30 for a long time now. I have right at 230K miles on my engine/trans. Have only had to redo the radiator tanks and hoses and the filler tank. Replaced the plugs at 100k. The time I thought I was having trans problems turned out to be a TPS (thanks Darren for the tip). As for the oil vis concern I agree with stepside. Rather have oil than not. Just get it right when you can and just drive it.
Dont even turn the key. It will destroy all the mds lifters in a hemi instantly!!!! You must use what is stamped on the cap. That differs from year to year.
Mixing viscosity's of oil ain't gonna do a damned thing. As for mixing synthetic with petroleum based oil, that's not going to hurt either, as evidenced by the "synthetic blend" oil you mived the petro oil with (petro oil's not dino based, contrary to what's comonly believed)
