Depending on what you've got for an engine, and how big of a show you want to put on around town, 4.10s will get you lots of attention, lots of rpm's on the road though, a good strong engine with 3.73s will make an all round good gear incase you wanted to go more than 5 miles.

yes there is. simply it take 3.73 turns of the drive shaft to turn the tires one revolution. the 4.10 take 4.1 turns of the drive shaft to turn the tires one revolution. the effect is torque multiplication that is applied to the tires. this results in faster acceleration. this also results in higher rpms necessary for any speed.
chosing the right gear ratio depends on several things.
what is your intended use for the car?
how much freeway driving do you do?
what is the the actual height of the rear tires?
what are the specs of your motor?

In a 9" there were/are 3.90's. Keep in mind though that you can also change the final drive ratio by choosing shorter or taller tires. Shorter increases the ratio numbers(at the pavement), taller reduces it at the pavement.

I've got 3.50's in mine with 295/50 tires (26.5) rpms at 70 is around 3100. But the motor with the cam it's got is comfortable cruising at 3500, it's right in the middle of the powerband and gets 18mpg at 80 mph.

Also, keep in mind what stall speed your torque converter is. If your converter is a 3k stall, for example, then you want to make sure your cruising RPM on the freeway is above that, so the fluid coupling in the converter is effective enough to eliminate excessive slippage. Otherwise, the converter will heat up over an extended period of time and cause unnecessary heat build-up.

This is, really, only an issue for extensive miles being logged on the freeway. Just something to consider if it's a DD, you have no remote/independent trans cooler, and you're looking to keep temps down.

Whats done to the rest of the drivetrain??

My car is pretty mild but a lot of fun with the 4:11's. IF I was going to change them I would go to the 3:55. Anything in between just isnt enough of a difference to warrant the change for me.(from an RPM stand point)
