I got a new comet project and it has a 302 in it...now the motor runs good and and idles good and no vibration where the motor is in the chassis, but when u look inside the car its shaking like an earthquake ... can anybody tell me why???? i got the motor out im thinking its the flywheel... any suggestions?????
So, did you just buy this car? Was the engine rebuilt at some time in its past? Why do you think it is the flywheel? How about the front of the motor, the vibration dampner, front pulley system, power steering pump, water pump or alternator? How does the car drive, can you feel the vibration at speed or just idle?
the spark plug wires may be on in the wrong order. it could be lots of stuff. it too bad you have the motor out. if it was in you could do a compression test. if thats the original flywheel then the only way it will cause a vibration is if a weight has broke off. you should be able to see the spot where the weight was attached to the flywheel on the engine side will be clean and fresh looking. sense your saying flywheel and not flexplate you must have a stick shift. the pressure plate could some how be out of balance also. i still think its going to be something with the cylinders not creating even power. this can be caused by some of the plug wires being mixed up 1 or more bad spark plugs, valve train problems, piston problems. you need to have the motor able to run to be able to diagnose these problems
its the original motor in it.. it vibrates when u speed it up or idle inside the car.... i said its the flywheel cause i put a new starter on it and it seems to hang up on the flywheel... i know the guy where i got the starter from and he gave me another one(both times the starter were new) and the same thing happened.. and its a automatic not a shift...i have put plugs, wires, and a new distributor in and checked the firing order 5-6 times......check the points in the distributor 5-6 times..the motor it self runs pretty good.. just a bad vibration inside the car... i only got a far as taking the motor out yesterday but havent looked at anything else since it got dark..... i had a mustang with a 302 and the balancers on the flywheel had broke off and it was shaking like hell im hoping thats the problem...........
you didnt need to pull the motor to see if the weights were still on the flex plate. you can just remove the inspection panel on the front of the bell housing then turn the crank while you watch the flex plate turn. you should see a weight welded onto it some where. if it was gone you would see the place where the weight was. sense you have it out you can check for that weight. if you have an air compressor you could get a leak down tester and test each cylinder to see if any have excessive cylinder leakage. its similar to a compression test.
Well.............now that the motor is out of the car I'd open the oil pan and take a look at all of the rod and main bearings to see how the bottom end of the motor is doing.
Check the part numbers on the flexplate and balancer for the year. Maybe someone put a 50oz balancer or flexplate in there.
