I gave you a thread of your own in technical ..... :Welcome:

If the seals will still hold oil, all you need to do is take out one of the 3 bolts that hold the cover on and fill through the hole.

Many have changed to using farm equipment "corn head" grease. It is an excellent grease to lube the worm gear and thick enough not to leak out. A zerk can be added for filling. I don't have the links, but search out some threads on the change to grease.

    :)

When I worked at a Ford dealer in the 50's, we put chasis lube in the steering boxes of brand new cars.

i use lucas "red and tacky" grease you dont want to add oil as it will leak out the seals it would also be a good time to adjust the play in the worm gear

That sounds a lot like the Valvoline Crimson Red grease that I have been using lately. Made for severe duty like trucking, mining, agriculture. Stuff sticks to anything and leaves a coating behind.

I know with the corn head grease, it will melt some with the underhood temps and flow into all the nooks and cranies of the steering box without leaking from the seals.

    :)

This is a great thread I'm getting ready to swap out the gearbox on the Falcon, I got a $500 reproduction and it failed after two years when I opened it up it had oil and the gears were pretty much all worn out.

Let see how much a junkyard one rebuilt by me and a tube of grease will last :)

I put a zerk fitting on the top plate of my gearbox, and that makes it easy to fill with grease, without pulling the box or the plate. I use high time/high pressure grease, and so far, it works out great. Been 3yrs with no problems. There is a tech article in the tech article section on the mod.

Yeah, I didn't find it either. I think I lost the pics when my last computer bit the dust. I'll look at some old CDs and see if they are there.

    Thanks.

    Thanks Acornridgeman.

    I love u.
    :rofl2:

I want to refill because the box is leaking oil.

Think it's a good option refill with grease.

Maybe the gears aren´t in good conditions. If I take out the 3 bolts, And remove the cover. (I dont want to move the adjust screw) Can I see the gears?

    That sounds interesting.

they are not gears per say...they are a worm gear with ball bearings...you don't want to disturb them.
to take the top off you have to remove the bolts, then the adjusting nut and unscrew the top.

maybe Jeff will have an exploded view...
