Take the lock out of the door. Take it to a locksmith and have him cut a key for it. I did this about a year or so ago. Cost $15.

    Craig,

I lost a sock in the dryer afew months back. Any ideas on where it might be?

Also, do you think I should invest in Small Caps or Blue Chips (pork bellies is a given, right?)?

    Thanks,

    Rick :D

Funny this post should come up. It was time to tow my mav from my open lot storage to my new house into the garage. i couldn't find the keys!!! A 99 cent slim jim got me into the maverick in less than 30 seconds, and the key to my 86 mustang gt fired it up.
It did not want to take the key...but the tow truck driver said "watch" and he wiggled and pushed the key till sure enough, it turned the ignition and fired the car up!!! He said that all fords are like that!! I am sure it is not to healthy for the ignition switch, come to think about, I like the re keying idea better!!

What the tow-truck driver said about Ford keys may be right. Back in my Mustang days, the keys to my 68' Mustang would start my neighbors Pinto, but the Pinto keys would not work on the Mustang. Many years and a different Mustang later, my Mom bought a Merc. Monarch. The Monach keys would open the doors on my Mustang, but not the other way around. I always did think that was weird.

    Related question...

I have a related question...do you think a locksmith can rekey my trunk cylinder to work off of my front door/ignition key? If so, this would really make my life easier...

    Thanks,
    Atzy.

I really doubt they could. Totally different key. Maybe some custom work would be required to do so.

I just thought of another option for you. IF you have a parts Mav, or can find a junkyard Maverick/Comet with the key, you could just take out the column of that car (and the door lock cylinders) and put them in your car. It wouldn't be cheaper, but it would be a lot less hassle than drilling apart your column to get it out. Just a suggestion; don't know if it helps or not, but it's a possibility. :)

Unfortunatley Ford keys are like that, at least the old ones are. Thats the biggest problem with old Fords and why they're so easy to steal. I knew this going in before I bought my Mav and it often worries me too, I may end up totally changing the lock cylinder in the column and the door locks in the future. Our Club Wagon got stolen back in 94 (Long story there) but fortunatley it was before we rebuilt the Carburetor and it died on the theif two blocks away where my dad later found it. Thank God for a bad carburetor :). The theif was eventually arrested.

    Hey Atzy,

I'm a locksmith myself out here in Colorado and that's always been the usual answer since the keyway is reversed on the trunk lock. got me thinking though. I might find an old mav door cylinder and see if I can make the plug work on the trunk lock. Man, if that works it would be a lifesaver for most of us. I'll let you guys know the results.

the Ford key is two sided (as you can put it in upsidedown and still it will work). I once had one key cut for both locks...(y)
