I just bought a 1977 maverick 4 door with the 6 cyl engine.

It drives and shifts ok , but it wont stay running unless I have the gas pushed down. It's start right up but dies immediately if I dont keep the pedal down. I tried setting the idle real high but that didnt work.

I'm an engine noob so please keep it simple.

I've heard vacuum leaks or IAC maybe to blame?

Welcome to the center of the Maverick/Comet universe!!!
A 77 Maverick does not have an IAC (Idle air control) system. A vacuum leak is however a good possibility.

Ok , also , I was told it had a clogged cat , could that contribute as well?

Also when I drive along I can hear hissing noises from the passenger side under the dash and it changes when I play with the climate controls.

You have a vacuum line for the a/c broken or loose. Finding it might fix your problem.

A clogged up catalytic converter will cause the car to be pretty much undriveable due to lack of power caused by extreme backpressure. Fix the vacuum leak firat and see what you get...
