Help with getting Comet to hook up

    Ok my son wants to do HS drags and not gonna have much time so here's our set up so far 12.5:1 compression 347 with Yates prepped heads Roush ported and polished intake aluminum flywheel 9 inch with 486 gears 9.5 slicks stock suspension with drag shocks a 650 mechanical lift cam 260 duration 106 center line cam but I'm still working on building the passenger side header and have to plumb the bottle wire the car and not gonna get much test in tune time in so wondering what has worked for you guys

    Whats done to the suspention? Front and rear.Also since you mentioned aluminum flywheel im assuming its a stick the launch technique could be tricky.

    A good loose front suspension and a set of cal-tracs with monoleafs and adjustable shocks will get you far.

    Like JoeDirt said, at the least CalTracs in the rear. You really need some type of traction add, and a lot of guys swear by the CalTracs.
    The front end, make sure the front sway bar is not attached, and a set of used 6cyld springs.
    One last thing would be a set of frame connectors like the ones JoeDirt sells would go along way to stiffening the subframe............IMHO

    I have Caltracs on the rear and 3way shocks on the front set at 90/10. Good set of stickies will help a lot. :)

    I have a set of Traction Bars From Shelby for a 66 mustang Pt#GFMK18127B Do you think that they will work. What Frame connectors work best. WOW just found a Price on the sales recipet from 1966 these were $38.00 List from Ford that dont even buy a bolt anymore...

    just because the track prep may be bad doenst mean dont try. if anything a good adjustable suspension is even more needed.
    would defintly get cal tracs and 2 way adjustable shocks all the way around.
    use really good tires that are in good shape. a tire with some tread may be helpfull for providing control if the car is out of shape.

    Man, I hope your son is prepared to handle it. Sounds like a beast. You know your son but there are very few high school kids I'd turn loose with that much horsepower.

    I wouldn't remove the front sway bar. Could be a handful if it gets sideways with no sway bars.

    sorry that i gave you the wrong impression. im not a never lift guy. i drag race my car to measure its performance. i have no problem lifting when traction is gone. the run is wasted at that point.

    drag slicks work well on a prepped track. a treaded drag tire like some et streets or drag radials will help with recovery if the rear end of the car is sliding out. also the thicker side wall used in these tires makes for a more stable car on the top end.

    Wasn't trying to start an argument just trying to get some advice on what worked for you guys to save on some of the time of trial and error I know what works best but, I'm not chopping the car up and putting in a 4 link I'm already upset about the hood. To be honest I'm a little nervous about it hooking and lifting on him

    So, is your son inexperienced at drag racing and has he ever driven this car at the drags?????????????
    If your answer is no, then I would de-tune the car by either retarding the timing or putting a throttle stop on it. It's one thing for an experienced drag racer to race on an improperly prepaired track, but to have your son do this with a potentially stout car.......................well, your the father, you be the judge...............IMHO

    I already told him if we cant get some test runs and the tracks not right we are not turning the bottle on and going to detune it so he can get some track time in Just because I personaly have put a car into the wall twice unfortunatley, Once was driver error my own (car lifted and so did I slammed down hard and made a right turn luckly I was in the right lane) and the other was mechanical failure (blew a slick latter found a large chunk of metal hanging out of inside stuck in the tube not sure if picked up in track or pits). I dont want to subject my son to this but, I do understand track concerns temps, prep tires and all I just was hoping for a little insight on traction devices. As for saftey Im going to require him to let me make 1 full throttle hard pass prior to him driving it at all due to saftey concerns :rofl2:
