    Acid? That really is BS.

I even drank a cup of oil after it was used for 15,000 miles, and I didn't get any buzz, and saw absolutely no hallucinations.

    Tasted like coffee.

Some good reading about motor oil:

    Oxidation and Deposits
Oxidation is the most important form of chemical breakdown of motor oil and its additives. The chemicals in motor oil are continuously reacting with oxygen inside an engine. The effects of oxidation, due to this reaction, as well as the by-products of combustion, produce very acidic compounds inside an engine.
The various acidic compounds cause corrosion of internal engine components, deposits, changes in oil viscosity, varnish, sludge and other insoluble oxidation products that can cause a performance and durability degradation of your engine over a period of time due to oil breakdown. The products of oxidation are less stable than the original base hydrocarbon molecular structure and, as they continue to be attacked by these acidic compounds, can produce varnish and sludge.

Interesting to note that later on in the text, the author talks about one of the main anti-oxidation additives of oil is ZDDP --- and as we all know, the Feds have banned much of the ZDDP additive to prevent damage to catalytic converters.

I change the oil in my Mav every 6,000 miles. But it's a daily driver, so that only equates to about 3-4 months between changes. I personally think any more often then 5,000 miles/6 months is overkill on any car. My grandpa runs Mobil 1 synthetic in his vehicles and only changes the filter and adds a quart every 5,000 miles. He only completely drains changes the oil every 20,000 miles.. he's been doing it that way for decades and ran several vehicles to 300,000+ without any issues...

I don't drive my '73 as much as I would like but, I always put a zinc/phosphorus additive in it every time I change the oil. I can't help but invision microscopic ball bearings, due to the zinc/phosphorus additive. I probably haven't driven my '73 more than 500 miles in the last 6 months. Thanks, Acornridgeman.

The question of "how frequently do you/should you" change engine oil is a matter of, "who you ask". You can ask 100 people and get 70 different opinions.
Ideas on how frequently u change is as wide as, " what brand/weight/type" do u prefer. I put somewhere like 2000-3500 a year on my Comet and of the opinion to change it and filter once a season - I believe anything more is overkill.

I only racked up about 300 miles total last year on mine, changed it once last fall before tucking her away for the winter, and will be changing it again soon if the weather holds out :) i just do mine at the beginning and then end of each season, cheap insurance and protection... though i do run SynPower in mine :)

I went ahead and changed it but this time I wrote down the date so I can do the miles or so many month thing. I appreciate all your opinions.

My Mav gets changed once a year, in the spring. That usually amouts to 3-4000 miles. Other vehicles gets theirs changed about 4-5000 miles. Big truck gets changed at 20,000 miles, usually about every two months, but it holds 11 gallons .

Everything around here get a dose of Lucas, even the lawnmowers. Oils are usually Pennzoil products, except the big truck which gets Rotella or Delvac.

On my toys that do less that 1000 miles a year, they are kept in a garage inside the house, no radical temp changes, and I run them once a month or so, get'em hot enough to boil any moisture out of the oil/engine. I use a top shelf synthetic, and change my oil every few years, It looks perfect, I dont believe a car with 300 miles on the oil has harmful compounds building up inside the oil. I could see this being an issue if you did 4000 miles and then parked the car for a year. I will let you know if something bad happens.:hmmm:

And my lawn mower and snow blower are jealous of how well I take care of my old cars!
