I have an 200ci inline six with C4 out of a 70 Maverick that I'm putting into a 63 Comet. Just had the trans rebuilt. Trying to figure out a tapping noise coming from the bell housing area now that it's back in. http://mmb.maverick.to/images/smilies/cool.gif
Where it looks like I should have some alignment dowels between the bell housing and the block the holes are offset. Right now the only thing I have aligning the trans and the block are the bolts.
Does anyone know if this application uses alignment dowels and if so are the dowels supposed to be offset? http://mmb.maverick.to/images/smilies/hmmm.gif

I have never seen a post 60's Ford engine without alignment dowels for the trans...
my guess is you need 'em, but I have never seen any that are offset. Do you mean "stepped", one side with a larger diameter than the other?

It looks like what I believe are the dowel holes do not line up perfectly. I suspecting that the C4, or at the very least the bell housing, may have been replaced at one time and I do not have the original as I had thought.
The bolt holes do line up, just not my dowel holes, and after reinstallation of the trans I am hearing a moderately loud tapping from inside the bell housing.
Going to drop the trans again to try and see what's going on.

does the torque converter have a drain plug and if so is it located in the correct location in the flexplate?

    End Result

Finally got the transmission back out and a chance to look inside the bell housing again. While the transmission was at the rebuilders the torque converter was sent out for rebuild. It ended up swapped for another one already rebuilt. The new/swapped torque converter had a welded seam that was sticking out just enough that when hot was hitting the inside of the bell housing. I've since cleaned up the seam/weld and got it all back together and the tapping appears to be resolved. http://mmb.maverick.to/images/icons/icon10.gif
