x 2!!!!!!! drive mine everyday & everywhere. People always have something negative, but in the bigger picture, I just about never go a day without somebody complimenting on it
There are folks that "appreciate all old cars", and others that have pretty rigid agendas. Build your car well, and the appreciators will fall in line. You get one of these cars because it is not a "belly button" car.... If they don't like it, odds are it is not someone that I would hang with anyway. What I have found is that if you mention to someone that you are restoring a 1972 Comet without them seeing the car, many of them will kind of scratch their head and wonder why, if they can even recall what it is from back in the day. Mavericks don't have that anonymity, and there usually is some family history of a Mav that did yeoman's duty as the "second car" in the family. Most folks that walk around my car, see the stance and basic tweaks that I have done to it, tend to "get it". The guys that then get around to seeing cut shock towers and the 351W after that tend to take the car seriously. If if they don't, they can carry on in their narrow little world .... My mind set is more "cruise night" than "car show" anyway.
Exactly the same for me. How can the import guys not like it? I mean for most of them, their whole shtick is to "hotrod a sh!tbox econo car" right? Technically that's what our cars were when they were new. We're the original "sport compact" enthusiasts, aren't we? Mustang guys like my car too. I've not met one who didn't. Particularly the fox crowd, since they see themselves as the red-headed stepchildren of Mustang guys anyway, they can relate. Maybe the guy who wrote a check for his pristine '69 then fiddled with the spark plug wires, changed the oil all by himself and now he thinks he's a car guy might look down on it, but who in the world would care what he thinks? I've barely met any other Maverick people so I can't say much on that, but the ones I have met in person, who've seen my car, haven't given me any BS about my crappy paint, Krylon bumpers, etc... What little negativity I've heard has come from guys at cruise-ins who are of a mindset that a "car show" is really a "paint and bodywork show." That's ALL they look at. They can't see the forest for the trees. I know about the chips. I know about that little crack in the spoiler... Hey did you see the engine bay? The interior? Hey this thing has a clean stock-looking 351w swap, AC... looks great inside, hauls ass, drives everywhere... Oh, yes, and paint chips, yeah sorry about those... I really shouldn't even be here, should I? Hey what did you bring? Not sh!t? Oh... Well sorry about my paint.
I took my 66 ford custom car to a fund raiser /car show at work and had a crowd. the RS/SS camaro guy and the new corvette guy were sitting by themselves. The crowd liked my car and it looked absolutely nothing like the others as far as pretty goes. One person did tell when they were growing up they didn't have those cars they had cars like this. They liked that I had swapped in a 302 and had headers and whatever old school stuff I could find like the foot print gas pedal etc.
So my father had a 68 mustang since he was 19 and always envied maverick owners and now he won't stop asking to trade, the kids with the "low-riders" at shows are mad jelly of my 70 maverick and it's rusted and beaten so what Im trying to get at is they are being jerks because they are wicked jelly of you car
I started out life with a Chevy, then over the years migrated to Fords, but in all my 50 years of driving hot rods, muscle cars, race cars............have always migrated to people who actually love "CARS".............not just a single brand, but all cars. Whenever I take the Maverick somewhere on a trailer I get a lot of thumbs up, waves, etc. When at the strip I always get people coming over to see the car, even in the staging lanes. I've had a lot of different cars over the years and I'm always interested in other peoples cars and they have always been interested in mine.........and if their not.......................no big deal.....................but I still smile and answer any questions they have and just don't pay attention to the jerks. When I had my Model A Flathead at the strip I used to have the Honda, Mazda, etc. guys come over and say, "What kind of motor is that?" and most seemed really interested in what I had to say.......................you meet all kinds of different people.................some really nice, others are just Ok, and there are jerks..................but I don't let that spoil my fun!
I have experienced this! It's funny talking to Mustang folks at a show and they will not even look at your ride! Even though half of the stuff on there is the same! We are all blue oval racing!
back in the day.we had a hot Comanche at work 4.5l chipped header 4.11 w a 5spd that was 1989-90 when fox body mustangs were everywhere and they all were the "fastest" loved their expressions when they got dusted by a Jeep pick-up. find most frown on Mavericks or don't know what they are.
I work with a guy that owns a Cougar. I didn't think there was any prejudice until the comments started coming lately like "but it's still a Maverick!" and "why did you bother doing all that work to a Maverick?" Funny thing is, he is always asking how I did something and what parts I used when he starts to work on his Cougar which, by the way, has rotted floorboards and bondo in the quarters not to mention the other day I point out the massive cracks in the shock towers when he went to install a front end kit he bought. I just don't pay attention to anyone's snide remarks especially ones who think they are better than you just because of what they have.
If you spend your life worrying about what other idiots on this planet think you will be miserable its your car -life enjoy every moment don't let some other miserable jerk ruin your day
Jerks will be jerks no matter what. As an owner of both a Comet and Mustang. I like them both. Neither of my cars will ever be show cars. I don't know when I'll get the Comet done, but it will be driven just like my Mustang. No trailer queens!!! - Matt
Thats how it is around here. Anybody who builds a car from 1970's and earlier generally like anybodys cars, they know the hard work put in and give respect. (Generally older folks) Then I know people with fox bodies, Buicks, etc from the 80's up to present day cars and they generally are jerks and could care less about certain cars. They don't know what its like to dismantle and build one from scratch. (Geneally people my age and a little older). I agree with Old Goose. I dont care what others think, I like the styling of the maverick/comet and mine haven't let me down.
