so about a week ago my transmission made a strange noise and then went away so i started thinking about what i would do if it went out on me. i would either rebuild the stock C4 or possibly swap in an AOD. so any one out there that has done this swap what does it take? would you recomend it for the overdrive gear? let me know i'm not in any hurry because my trans seems to still be shifting fine and the fluid looks good just want to be able to wiegh in my options if the time ever comes.

i personally feel going to an overdrive is well worth it.

you wont recover what you spend in gas milage so dont do it just to try to save on gas cost.

you will want to change the rear gear ratio to take advantage of having the overdrive. if you dont the car will be a slug in over drive. chances are the rpms will be too low on the freeway to allow the engine to run efficiently.

if your building for performance then its worth doing. you will want to get an aod that is built for performance. a stock aod just doesnt cut it.

you can run a higher stall also. the aod has a lock up converter feature. this locks the converter shell to the input of the trans in 3 and 4 gear. this gets rid of the converter slippage factor in those gears and yet will allow your motor to be more in its power band when taking off.

Hang on thats a Tremec crossmember...:biglaugh:

Yeah with franks crossmember(he does awesome work by the way and it is worth it to get one of those if you are going to do the swap) and a Lokar cable set it is pretty easy to setup. Were you planning on going with a floor mount shifter or use the column still?

The biggest clearance issues you will have with those headers involve speed bumps:rofl2:

You will have to probably massage one or two of the tubes getting them around the shock towers but they fit around the transmission just fine.

hey guys im getting ready to drop my motor in and i just wanna double check on some things.....:dancing:

1.what are the torque specs. for the flywheel/flexplate bolts?
2.how many quarts should go into my tranny if its almost completely empty. i put tranny fluid in my torque converter (like a quart) before assembly of engine and tranny and my tranny was full before it leaked out the rear seal from a previous attempt. the first attempt was a fail becauce the guy i got my engine from failed to mention i might need a new oil pan:hmmm:. the engine originally came out of a 84 lincon town car. the oil pan(from the lincon) was hitting on the center link for the steering. i got the new pan oil pump and pick up on order for (71 maverick 302 w/ a.o.d) . hopefully some one can help me out:huh:
