So i picked up this 73 4 door from jamie, its got the 250 in it with the c4 cars completely stock except a few things ive changed trying to get better milage Electric fan, glasspack muffler,k&n air filter, complete tune up, msd box and coil and recurved distributor, rebuilt carb Timing is on 12* base ive been driving like a little old lady on 87 ethanol laden fuel. First tank 8mpg Second tank 14mpg And this one i got 16mpg 98% in town driving under 55 Geez.. wtf i figured this thing would pull closer to 18-20 in town Any suggestions? Whats your 6 cyl milage?
Put a jeep 4.0 in it they get great gas mileage and are very reliable. My Cherokee on 33s with a 5 spd gets 19 mpg around town under 55. Nother thing about jeep 4.0s is they have almost as much HP as a 5.0. If I ever get another mav that's what I'm gonna do.
255/60/15 speedo is accurate acording to the speed boxes Im going to see how it does on this tank of 93 octane non ethanol, car runs like a top just seems down on power. I think it does have a smaller then stock exhaust i measured it at just over 1-5/8
Buddy of mine only gets 20 mpg with regular 87 octane w/ethanol and 28 mpg with 91 octane wo/ethanol.
On my 250-6 in my 1976 blue 4-door, when I drove it out to Washington, D.C. for the MCCI Roundup Nationals in 2008, I got right at 18mpg. This was driving 65 to 70 mph, with the AC on. I was the only passenger. I also have done everything under the sun to try and get better gas milage. I would love to have an answer.
the 200 is certainly not a torque monster to start out with and you need to either start out reeaally slowly to avoid chugging gas to get it flying along?.. or tweak it to make better off idle power, IMO. Not that I've owned enough of those motors to say really.. but I have rebuilt 2 of them in the past(1 being in my 69 Mustang Coupe) and they really are good little motors once you do away with all that crap that Ford put on them. My bone stock but heavily tuned 200 would lay bit of rubber off the line with 3.25 gears once I go it tuned.. and the mileage went up at least 6-7 mpg for cruising speeds when the timing was dialed in correctly. Probably in the high teens or so for mpg. This was all mainly because the timing was set fairly aggressive off idle with the addition of an adjustable vaccum advance pot and rejetting. To do it correctly.. I had to pull mechanical out after about 2500rpm(IIRC, but it has been over 16 years by now). Only part mod's were a mandrel bent custom built exhaust(1 7/8.. I think?.. but might have been a 2" setup) with Walker/Dynomax Super Turbo.. cheap blaster coil.. carb choke horn removed with a tad bit of blending to the old motorcraft carb and the cheapest slightly oversized air filter I could find to fit the stock housing. The cheaper ones tend to flow better due to lack of filtration media(hence.. "cheaper") but therefore need to be changed more often. Also added some cheaper Bosch platinums to the mix with a clipped ground strap/side gapped arrangement that I used indexing washers on to point the spark at the intake valve for good measure. A lot of dancing around for a little 200, I know.. but it was more of an exercise to get it tweaked as nice as possible for quicker sale after the jackstand restoration was finished. First one to come see the car and drive it bought it right there on the spot for 3,500 bucks so it was well worth the effort. Other than all that hubub.. have you run a compression check/leakdown on the motor yet?
That is an awesome idea! I never thought of dropping a Jeep 4.0L in there... wonder if it would fit? And if you tune those 4.0s just right, them things are quick!
It would fit but the biggest issue is they have a rear oil sump, so either a new front steering/suspension setup or some oil pan/pickup mods would be required.
