I have just got a 1976 Maverick, It has a 250 and a C4 automatic. It only has 40k miles on it. I was wandering how much horsepower it has(all stock) and how mush it could have if i put headers and all that basic stuff? Also if i would be better off puting a 302 in it, and what kind of HP i would get out of it. I am new at working with cars so if you have any tips or sites, that would be very helpfull.
I am wanting the car to have some power behind it.

    Please help me:confused:

    Welcome to the board!

There is an excellent website that you will want to check out that covers the Ford 6 bangers and should answer all your questions about power and potential.
    www.fordsix.com

The place to start is get a manual, a good manual for your engine and learn how to do the basics. That will save you money in the long run. The amount of HP you need will depend on what you want the car to do. The lightweight of the Maverick along with a well tuned 250-6 and good traction, is very surprising to some people and the gas mileage will be great too.

    Re:I-6 power

You are looking at stock around 150 HP from a 250. With a header, bigger carb, 260 cam,and lots of head work your looking at 30 to 40 % more power, around 200 HP but these parts cost bucks and for what you can spend on hopping up a 6 you would be better off replacing it with a 302 since the bell housing on your tranny will bolt right up. Also being a 76 it will have the 5 lug suspension and I believe the 250's had the V-8 springs, your looking at 1500.00 either way doing it your self, double that if you pay someone. Don't tell the guy's over at Ford Six Forum they'll kill me, but if I had it to do again I would go the V-8 route.

check out the Holley/Webber from Stovebolt it's 65.00, It'll give you good low end throttle response and its a progressive 2 bbl so when you get to about 3/4 throttle it starts opening up the second bbl. It's really easy to tune and works well with minor and major performance enhancements. Use the Clifford 1.75 inch intake adapter with this and you can't go wrong. Then later you can upgrade your exhaust, cam and head. I believe a 4 bbl would be over kill, there is just not enough air flow through the log type head unless you want to turbo or supercharge it and force it through. I would suggest the FSP dual outlet header by Pacemaker with port divider, a Comp 260 cam, shave the head 0.50 and pocket port the head. Add an MSD blaster II coil, BlueStreak distributor cap and rotor some Accel or MSD 8mm wires and gap plugs at 0.50 and bump timing up to 12 BTDC and you will have some pretty respectable power. I have this basic setup on my 200 and it's plenty powerful and the torque curve is great. This is about 1000.00 worth of bolt ons with you doing the labor.
