I posted a pic of my engine on the new member form and was asked about the air cleaner. Funny story behind this one. I bought it from one of the truck drivers who deliver parts for Auto Zone in the D/FW area. He has a really nice (YUK) 68 Camero with a stroked BBC. The car is in the Austin area. You would know it if you saw it...VERY bright yellow paint, same color as the air cleaner. Anyway, he said he was going to make a custom one just for his car and wanted to sell this one. I paid $50 for it, and he brought it with him on his next trip. I had it installed on a 72 Ranchero with a 302 at first, It helped some. Of course a cool can with dry ice and rubbing alcohol seems to drop the temp WAY down. It cam off and sat in the garage for a few years..I traded my 70 Torino GT for my Maverick...The air cleaner just seemed to cry out at me to get used on my new project. And here it sits..I am running an old torker289 intake and a NOS plate with an extra 1" spacer, hood clearance is not a subject I want to tell you about. The company is still selling them, mine would have netted about $150 or so plus the hose for the freash air. Some of the stuff you can get from Home Depot..I have not run the Mav without it, but I do think the drop in temp is boosting the car somewhat..

OK...I have a full manual valvebody, so no kickdown rod..:( I am running a built C4, extra clutch pack in drum..I think the tranny guy put blue or orange clutch pack in..which ever is the higher performance ones. I have a Holley 650 double pumper that I worked over some. I changed the rear metering block to a front one, $ corner idle adjustment, and worked the jets out at the track. I truely think Edelbrock style carb works better on the street, Holley at the track, or at least it is that way for me.

Don’t forget to remove the funnel out of the trans tube before you run it again :D (y) with this setup and drilling the grabber scoops out to make them real it gets lots of cold air :bananaman

Can't resist telling this one, found a stainless paper towel dispenser at the goodwill. Even has the original key lock on the back. Filled in the opening where the towels came out and bored a 3inch hole on eack side. Got a couple of pvc tubes and siliconed them in the holes. My Fairmont has dual headlights and I removed the inner ones and attached lengths of dryer vent hose to each and the tubes. Cut a hole large enough to fit down on the Holley carb with a hold down bolt down the center. Picked up a couple mph's with this crude setup. Sure gets a lot of looks when I have the hood off.

If you ever get a chance to run with/without the Ram Air, and get a chance to compare your ET's/MPH, could you post back? The company claimed the thing was good for, like, .4 seconds on a '68 (I think) Mustang. Seems kinda like a lot to me. The web site is www.ramairbox.com if anyone is interested. Thanks!

YOu will need a small diameter dizzy to run a drop base version. Even with the non drop base some large cap dizzies can hit the base and may require notching. Looked into this setup but a Cowl hood is almost a gaurantee. Maybe MAVERICK MAN could offer some of those niftey carbonfiber cowl hoods and this set up as a package deal.;)

Ivy Collins has one of those ram air systems on his car. It has been along time ago ...but If I remember right he said it was good for three tenths in the quarter, and if he takes it back off he will slow down by three tenths !

It's easy to put one togather.
Get a cleaner base with a snorkel. Get another snorkel, cut the hole at an angle to the other one and mount.
Get the rectangle hose that fits the snorkel ends and run them out to each side of the radiator apron where there are openings in the front panels.
Make up small housings at those points and you have duel intakes.
    Done it 15 years ago.

yes MAV, I remember he has that set-up, just could not remember how much it improved his performance. Thanks.
Mr. Bluegrass, in your opinion, will it help a mid 10 second car that runs with NO air cleaner?

I would guess it would help.
Taking air without a cleaner bottom pan loses airflow at the entrance to the carb and power reduction from taking in hot engine air.
