what year is my maverick???

i've been tring to find out what year my maverick is, my vin # on the dash is gone and the tage on the door has been washed away, my title says its a 1976. what i want to know is if there is a diff between each year?
my maverick is a 2 door, has no power steering, andthe skinny bupers both in frunt and back, any help would be gr8 thanks Steven M.

 

I would be concerened that there is no VIN in the dash. I would imagine in most state that would be illegal.

A 1976 would not have the skinny bumpers, so either the bumpers have been changed...or the title you have is for a different car.

 

will the bigger bumper just fit up to the same modles with the small ones? because my maverick has the lower deck in the back and its grooved perfectly for the skinny bumper. also is there any other place on the car i can find the vin asuming that the body peaced havn't been replaced?

 

also the car has frunt disk brakes

 

Small bumper conversions are very popular.

A catalytic converter hump on the passenger side floor would indicate a later model.
Does you car have a glove compartment or package tray?
Is the emergency brake hand or foot operated?
Location of fuse box?

 

There are other places to find the VIN, but it would require removing the front fender.

 

Agree with Craig, there would be a VIN stamp on the top of the apron as long as it isn't rusted there.

Depending on the plant location, some cars had a tag on the passenger front side of the core support. Not sure what years.

 

i'll check it tomorrow and see if i can find a vin under there thanks guys

 

you most likely have a tag job car. what that is , is some one took the license plates and vin number and swapped them onto the 76 they had because most likely the newer car was in better shape thane the older car they had (pre smog car) that means your car is prolly a pre smog car but has a title for a 76 becasue the person before you didnt want to deal with smog. that happens alot with older cars in california. also newer cars that are wrecked cut up or stolen.

you prolly have a pre smog car with alot of mechanical or cosmetic issues such as rust or smog
I wouldn thave bought the car without a vin number in the window or on the body.
it raises alot of questions and maybe alot of problems good luck with what you find out once you do find the body year against the vin that youre supposed to have.

 

yeah i didn't check the vin number with title when i got the car, to be truthfull this was my first old school project and i deff over looked a few things lol looking back maybe i should of got that Torino insted lol thanks for the help guys,
although i dought it is their any way to get this car lagit again?

 

The problem can be fixed just depends if your willing to do whats needed

 

I wouldn't advise spending any $$$ on it until you can verify it's legality...

 

i've already invested time and money into the car and it is a solid car. the only snag i have now is this vin number issue. whats it take to get it lagit again?

 

the best thing you can do is buy a rusted busted parts car thats pre smog thats already registered or is on non op with dmv and change the numbers off of that car.

its not exactly legit but its a dont know dont care kinda thing.
your car will then be registered as whatever the parts car was. otherwise you might get into all kinds of obstacles with dmv and the highway patrol.
if you tell dmv that you dont have a vin number the first thing theyre going to say is trailer it to the nearest highway patrol to have it inspected. who knows what theyre going to charge you to inspect. theyll prolly tell you to take it to a shop at around $100 and hour it can get expensive FAST
either that or theyll tell you that you CANT register the car and they want you to scrap it.
scrapping it would be ok IF they would give you a junk slip and then you could just file a junk slip with dmv then you can re register it as a salvaged car.

 

i've already have the car registered in my name and i have the title in the same i just dont have a vin plate on the dash have i got the hard part over as far a paper work over with then?
