So think I found the problem with my power steering: But the bigger problem is THIS. It is connected to the top of the engine, and I thought it was the throttle control, but its not. I think it may be a transmission linkage, but I'm not sure. I need to know if the car is safe to drive at this point...
The boot on the power assist cylinder is to protect the seal and shaft from debri. It istn leaking because the boot is loose, but the seal could be bad. the rod coming off the trans is the kickdown linkage. You can drive it thiat way but it may not kick down into passing gear the same as it used to. I actually drove mine for years without that rod attached. You just need a new clip to hold it back on the lever again.
So I'm thinking this is the kickdown rod, but I can't find any puictures to confirm this, and the chilton manual that i Accessed online through another thread on this forum doesn't speak specifically about it. Am I correct, and if so, where could I find a visual to instruct how to re-attach it? Neither end of the rod is broken (i.e. neither hole at the end of the rod is cracked, so I don't see how it couldve come off). Sorry for the all caps exclamation/yelling thread title but it worried the p!ss out of me, since I need to be at work soon and a) have no way to get there if the car isn't safe to drive, and b) I'm nowhere near work. The trials and tribulations of learning about cars through experience! Thanks to anyone for help, and once again sorry for the excitement!
Thanks ryan! The car has never actually had a "passing gear", I just figured it was due to the small engine. Thats a nice load off my back!
I ran without one for years, just down shift to 2nd. when passing...that's all the rod does...:Handshake
