im getting an oil cooler for my 302 but not sure what size would be best, Im sure the bigger the better but i dont want the oil be so cool that it dosnt protect the engine parts. here are some i have been looking at.
remember that time you forgot to post links or pictures!!! REMEMBER!!! yea, that was funny. sigh, good times, good times.
Unless your car is going to see severe duty {racing, towing, extreme ambient temps, etc.} you really shouldn't need a cooler......Install an oil temp gauge first and see what the temps are........If your oil temps are staying cooler than the water, you're fine.....Just my 2 cents
yeah that looks kinda close for a maverick :16suspect. i have my filter relocated anyway lol sorry i forgot to post the link lol http://www.summitracing.com/parts/EAR-21008ERL/ would sumthin like this one work? a member told me that an oil cooler of some sort would be good for my .60 engine, thats the reason why im asking
get the biggest one you can mount... this is the style I have...cooler w/fan... http://www.summitracing.com/search/?keyword=oil cooler fan&dds=1
I'm with streamliner on this one. Unless you're making big power.. drive in 100 degree heat all the time(doubtful in Northern Cali).. or drive up mountain roads a lot(possible in Northern Cali).. or consistently rev the snot out of it because you have 4.xx rear gears with no overdrive?.. that lightweight little car won't constantly tax the oiling system enough to even worry about it, IMO. But.. if many of those possibilities are combined?.. you definitely need one and the larger the better as others have already said. I've also run a few .060 over smallblock Fords without them.. with another going into my Comet soon.. and never had oil temp issues at all. Many of my friends friends with Mustangs running shorter gears don't use them either and they make plenty of power to the point that I would think they would want one too.. but they also say it adds unnecessary complexity/weight and have been running them for years that way. It's the head gasket seal(don't use cheap) and water temps that you need to keep an eye on with the larger overbore, is all. Just use a decent radiator and cooler thermostat(160 or 180) with a water wetter type product to help transfer the heat a bit quicker and don't worry about it if none of the above exclusions apply to your scenario. Just my dirty penny on the matter.
You could always use one of these: But it probably be more work than it's worth..and for a street car, I doubt you'd need it.
i live in North Carolina and the heat only hits 100 during the summer every now and then, thanks for the info. i would like to autocross with it (a once or twice a year thing) but i wont be doing that during this summer anyway, its mostly a daily driver nuthing extreme about the motor
If you wanna go that route then you can use a transmission cooler from a F250. I paid $10 for this one at the junkyard. http://1bad6t.com/Maverick/maverick_29.html
