Any one have an idea why my 75 still starts when the neutral safety switch is in my hand? (all four wires are disconnected) im trying to hook up a B&M star shifter.

if the switch is unhooked it won't work be careful it may start in any gear the switch is what keeps it from starting in drive or reverse

did you unhook it or was it unhooked when you started?
my thinking is , the car should not start with it unhooked without a jumper wire across the plug...:yup:

I un hooked it. the plug has 4 wires coming out of it 1. purple w/ white dots 2. white w/ purple stripe 3.purple w/ white stripe 4. black w/purple stripe (I think) and there is a red w/black stripe jumper on the plug. it dose not matter if they are hooked together or un hooked it turns over. maybe I'm having a huge brain fart but this is frustrating the hell out of me

According to the wiring diagram for a 75 that I am looking at the black/pink wire and the purple/white wire are for you back up lights. The red /lt blue should go to your ignition sw and through the neutral safety switch and then to starter solenoid.

Hope that helps some, shouldnt be a jumper wire on the plug so that may be were your problem lies

Actually the 74 diagram shows it better

if its got a jumper wire take it off that disables the switch wire it up according to the diagram then it should work it really depends on the style of switch my dodge has three detents in the tranny park neutral reverse some cars will start in any gear because if the switch is unhooked it doesn't know what gear its in thats why its called a safety switch my uncle put a old dodge through the back of his garage and about killed both of us when we were young just by unhooking the switch when you start it make sure its in park or neutral

What really has me baffled is the neutral safety switch which has been removed from the base of the steering column and disconnected, but when I move the column shifter to reverse then it wont turn over, in other words the switch is working but its not in the car.this is starting to really frustrate me.
