Invisible Emergency Buttons for Shaved Doors I have my door handles shaved and have asked a lot of prople, at car shows this year, as to where they mounted their backup hard wired switch. They always reach for the same spots under wheel wells or bumpers and my guess that is where theives would be looking also. I found this link to a great posting in the H.A.M.B about using 1 half of a house alarm window/door switch, a relay and a hand held magnet, to unlock a door if your remote goes dead, and want to share it with the group. This switch is absolutely invisible and can be mounted anywhere inside of the body skin of the car. I just ordered my switch from Ebay and it was under 5 bucks with free shipping. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=742729
I really like it - I'm going to look for a magnet with some really nice power and hide it somewhere on the chassis of the car. No one would be looking for something like that and I could paint it to match the chassis and make that invisible too Not the chassis - the magnet
You can use any Hall effect sensor you can find does not need to be that specific piece. All those are is a hall effect sensor in a shell marked up usually a bit.
On the dead battery issue, I always thought of having a device that holds a 9 volt battery with a couple of contacts to mate to amother set of contacts on the car to trigger the solenoid.
This is just a nicer, more secure, way of doing the back up electric switch - now a dead battery would be a game changer for sure
on my last one, I used momentary switches mounted inside the trunk(which I still needed a key for) and dont forget for an all out failure(not just loss of electric, but like a sticking solenoid), a hidden cable pull will be a lifesaver.
I have a hidden pull cable for when the battery fails or the remote stops working. If you do not have a mechanical release hidden somewhere you will be in bug trouble at some point.
I knew a guy who shaved the interior and exterior door handles on his civic, his battery went dead while he was listening to music in parking lot, people had to jump his cat so he could get out (power windows).
