I'm in the process of installing a Top Loader four speed in place of a C-4 behind the stock 302 and was wondering if anyone has had experience with the combination of Hooker 6901 headers and a Lakewood 15200 bell housing? I've read that there is a little interference and wanted to know where. If so how difficult is it to clearance the housing? Thanks, Bruce
on a different car that i used the lakewood bell housing on, the long tubes hit the bell housing around the starter motor area. im interested in this because i plan on putting one in my car when i get to that point.
When I had the toploader in my car, I ran Blackjack headers and they hit the Lakewood Bellhousing in the starter motor area as Bryant indicated. Never tried with the Hooker headers.
Thanks I'll keep you posted with pictures. I hope to have it all together by next week. Also I have an ancient sets of Black Jack headers from my first Maverick hanging on the wall of my garage and their design is very similar to the Hookers. Bruce
My blackjacks in my 75 hit the lakewood in the starter area as well as the drivers side. You will find that there is alot of "excess metal" all the way around the bellhousing.
Thanks, John, is that metal difficult to trim back? What do you recommend I use to cut it with? It is high strength steel isn't it? Bruce
mine ! i cut little on bellhousing because dont want to modified the headers,,, was fine,,,before restore my car I make sure every thing was ok
Okay the bell housing and headers are co-inhabiting at this time. We ended up trimming the block plate and the bell housing flange to clear the headers and the external slave cylinder. I burned up my 4" grinder in the process but sacrifices had to be made! I've got to find a solid stand for my dial indicator and buy the adjustable dowel kit yet. A little touch up paint won't hurt either. Here's a picture of the driver's side including the slave cylinder. Bruce
I bought the slave cylinder with the bell housing modified for it from Mike Forte's Parts Connection ( www.fortesparts.com ) Previously I had purchased an entire hydraulic set up (master, slave and braided steel line from Extreme Custom Parts ( www.extremecustomparts.com ) but soon learned that the slave wasn't going to fit in the very limited space available. Bruce
That's interesting. The first setup was a concentric bearing type? I forget what trans you're using but I'm surprised it wouldn't fit in the bellhousing.
The first set up was external too but the slave was too long to fit alongside the 164 tooth flywheel bell housing regardles of how I tried to 'imagineer' it. I'm using a '70 top loader with a Hurst Super shifter with the straight rods. I really didn't want an internal throw out bearing because of possible leakage problems and having to remove the transmission and bell housing to replace it. With this set up if it fails/leaks I can just replace it off the side and not have to 'overhead press' the other parts out of the way. Bruce
