Hey guys, sorry for all the posts the past couple days, just had a lot of questions. I couldnt find a thread that answered my question. Anyways, theres a guy selling a t5 tranny in town, the problem is that its out of an '86 firebird. Will this work on my 71 comet 302? If not then which ones will? The automatic C4 in the comet right now is starting to go and I wanted to convert to a manual. Could someone post a link to a guide on how to do that? Thanks for all the help.
The GM trans are going to have a different spline count on the input & output shafts... Could use a GM disc but you'd also need at the least a GM yoke for the driveshaft... Shifter location isn't same as on the Ford versions and at least some are "clocked" with the trans on a angle, but I believe that's in the bellhousing... What you really need is one from a 5.0 Stang, with the later ones('89-up) being stronger than the earlier versions(I've busted a '86 version)... The OEM 5.0 T5 has a first gear of 3.35 with the stronger aftermarket/Ford Racing versions having a 2.95 ratio... With the correct pilot bearing a 4cyl Stang/Turbo Coupe trans can be used but I'd recommend against it, as they aren't as strong and have a stump pulling first gear of 3.97... Those would work good in a 6cyl application... http://www.fordmuscle.com/archives/2000/09/t5swap/index2.shtml
Another thing to be aware of is the fact that even though ford started using the WC T5 in 1985 GM didnt start using the WC T5 untill 1988. One thing Krazy Comet hasnt noted (not common knowledge) is the pre-1993 GM transmissions use a different Transmission case that has a GM bolt pattern on it (1993 and up uses the same case as a ford T5) so even if you bought the one out of the firebird you wouldnt be able to bolt it up to anything...
Could someone post a link to a good guide on how to do the swap and what you would need? I can't find any good ones.
