Im getting all the parts together to swap 302 out for a 351w. One item I found locally was a used b&m 2800-3200 torque converter. Guy says it has 3000 miles on it and had it in 69 mustang. Reason for selling was his upgrade to a aod trans. He says he paid $459 for it and is asking $150. Now one side of me says take the chance for $150, the other side says, do I want to pull the motor or trans if it bad? What do you guys think?
i would have it checked and cleaned out before putting a used converter in. if the trans it was in was going bad it could have filled the converter with junk that will kill your trans.
I hope. The motor is bored 30 over, valve lift int. .520 exh. .544, holly 630 , heads mild port and polish, 1.6 roller rocker, Dual plane medium rise performer rpm intake, etc...
I would find out what brand it is and see what the price would be if you bought it new. You might call the convertor company and see what they would charge to go throught it. Might be worth it to look at a Summit catalog and see what a new convertor of the same stall would cost new.
If the trans it was in was shedding metal, it can usually be seen it by looking inside the hub opening with a strong light... Sometime back I was considering a used one but fluid looked like red metal-flake paint...
I know the fins could get bent under heavy load but are there any friction parts in a converter? Could it just get a good flush? I definitely don't want to trash my trans. I also looked on jegs. 1.
