Guy's, I was wondering if any one know's much about D00E Heads? They are on my rebuilt 302 and not sure what year.Any info will help. Thanks!
Here's what comes up, if you Google it: http://forums.corral.net/forums/5-0-5-8-engine-tech/1117391-how-good-351-d0oe-heads.html
D0OE Heads Hi I Have Several sets and have used them for years. D0OE Heads can have casting date codes from 1968 to about 1975. They are best known in the auto circuit as 351 W Heads in the boating circuit they are 225 Hp 302 Mercruiser. Mercury Marine used these heads for about 5-6 years on 302 blocks with a cast iron 4 Bbl Manifold. the manifold is exactly like the auto part except casting number and the firing order was ground off as the mercruiser used the 351 w cam. They used 7/16 bolts with integral washers and 6.903 pushrods. Most people will tell you to throw them away and buy GT40 heads or GT40P Heads , I like them and still use them , my fresh 289 sports a set of mercruiser heads.....but I have already good sets and Im not having to do a complete rebuild on any of my sets.
if you already have them.. they're not bad heads really. The exhaust ports are very poor for higher rpm duty and need a fair amount of attention though. Just need to keep in mind that smaller chambers increase compression.. and therefore power/efficiency.. across the entire power band. Something which those heads will not give you much of unless you run them through the mill a few times. Hence the reason why many will say to get the other heads mentioned above. Then again, ALL factory Ford Windsor heads need lot's of help IMHO. Plus.. the newer designs will ping/detonate far less with agressive timing despite having a slighhtly higher C/R. Some flow data and spec's here. http://www.carbdford.com/tech/flowdata.htm So, unless this is just a very mild low rpm build?.. I would not dump the $600-$800(or more) to try and make them something they're not.
