Need help, broke down in driveway.

Getting fuel, but turn engine over and get nothing. Turn off key, engine rotation kicks backwards for a 1/4 rotation. Checked spark by holding a wired plug 1/4" away from good ground. Cranked engine for 5 seconds, no spark. But when I turn the key off, i get a strong spark. Did the same spark test with distributor wire from coil. Turn key on...spark, turn key off...spark. New cap and rotor was recently installed and it has been run since then. Any ideas?

I should mention, we had this problem once before when we replaced the voltage regulator and battery. It wouldn't start for an hour and then it finally decided to start for no reason. Then we've started and driven it a few times since then with no problem. Then tonight, all I did was replace a thermostat and then bam, dead again. I just drove it last night too.

They sure can. That is, ofcourse, if you have points. I'm not sure when breakerless started...

Is there a way to bypass the ignition switch to start the car?

I can't find that part anywhere, only the ignition module, and key barrel assembly. Nothing for the base of the column.
