Anybody have any experience making/crimping hoses? I'm talking about rubber hoses with AN or JIC fittings on the ends. If anybody has made them I'd like to know what tools you use.
ive done lots of an hoses. cloth braided is allot easier than steel braided. all you need are the right size wrenches. put some spray lube on the fitting and hose before you put it together. here is a car that im working on right now. it just made these fuel lines last fri.
That looks sweet Bryant. You sure you didn't get the stainless tube idea from me? j/K Im also done with the steel braided stuff forever. Ive poked and cut enough fingers to not want to do that again. I went from this setup when I had nitrous.... To this setup when I removed the nitrous and went back to mechanical pump.
Really I just need to make a two hoses to hook up a remote oil filter. I don't really care about the braided hoses. I got to looking in the jegs catalog and saw the hose fittings and such. The I saw some sort of tool that goes in a vise. I was wondering what I needed to get if I wanted to crimp a few at home.
no special tools required if you get these swivel types. Marring the pretty anodizing or overtightening are about the only pitfalls to watch out for. I always heat up the end of the hose with a torch or even kitchen stove to soften up the rubber just enough to ease installation. http://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS-Performance-Products/555/100001/10002/-1 I also go to the extreme of spraying the inside of the finished hose/s with starter fluid and then using compressed air to get rid of any tiny pieces of trash. You probably wouldn't believe what makes it inside those things while being mfgrd, shipped, and worked on.

And like my uncle Joe used to tell me years ago.. "a little.. nipple lube.. never seems to hurt" either. I'm pretty sure he was talking about cars though since I was always hangin over or sitting on his fenders while he worked on his hotrods fuel and water lines. Trick is to not twist and stretch the pee out of the hoses braiding while you're trying to hold it in place as you twist the hose barb portion onto the end of it. I typically use a rag to hold the hose and grab a larger area within a full fist(no fingertips) to prevent smearing/stretching the stainless weave. PS. yep.. apparently those are nickel plated versions. They do make clear and polished versions too. I myself either use the nickel plated versions or strip the anodizing off with acid.. since that makes them more durable(nickle) and mar resistent(non-anodized) while simultaniously getting rid of the all too common red/blue circus colors in the engine bay. Black ones look nice too.
