so im seeing the light at the end of the tunnel in my 302 swap. the core engine i have came out of a torino. the water pump for that engine has its outlet on the passenger side but my radiator has it on the driver side. i purchased a mustang pump with a driver side outlet, but now my belt drive doesn't line up and my alternator bracket doesn't fit. my question is do i completely change my belt drive and accessories(VERY hard way) or do i piece together radiator hoses to cross sides(sketchy way). i have the room to run the hoses because i have an electric fan
swap Put your water pump and pulley set up back together so it lines up and works. change the hoses, saw some neet after market hoses through summit . I am in nearly the same boat..trying to finish up the loose ends of a V8/C4 swap. I have changed timing cover, pump, alt brkts p/s brkts......still have alignment issues. I know an early 69 mustang radiator fits and has the hose locations where they need to be, good luck finding a good one. I changed my pass side water inlet setup to a drivers side then a guy at work gave me his nearly mint orig. 69 351W radiator and shroude! I had already bought a champion by then.Just cant win! Thats just my opinion
water pump The timing covers are not the same, you can put a spacer behind the water pump pulley and it will work. or change the timing cover.
Well i just did some digging through rusty parts and found a pulley for the water pump that will work with spacers. Now its just the alternator that needs botching altho i havent tested my radiator/fan assembly to see if it still clears. If that doesnt work im gonna put the torino pump back on and custom make the lower hose and be done with it.
Your problem lies in the balancer, not the pump, not the timing cover. The passenger side inlet pumps also used a different balancer. The timing covers are the same, except that you also need the bolt on timing pointer for the cover to go with the drivers side pump. You really cannot mix FEAD parts (Front End Accessory Drive) from the pre 70 and post 70 302's. They used a different offset balancer, plus the bolt pattern switched from 3 bolt to 4 bolt and the timing pointer changed as well because the drivers side inlet blocked access to the timing pointer for the passenger side pump balancer.
yeah i have the 3 bolt crank. im just gonna custom make the bottom hose. the radiator/fan i s a super tight fit anyways.
t cover I m running a 3 bolt crank with a summit balancer 72 t-cover and drivers side inlet pump. got the alternator brackets but not the spacer bought a p/s bracket......belt on outer (2nd)groove from damper of 3 bolt crank pulley over stock early waterpump pulley with a .50 spacer between pump and pulley to alternator with a .900 long spacer behind alternator pivot bolt. No p/s yet, but I want to hear it run and break in the cam. Then I'll figure it out, probably change crank pulley. I now have all the components and bolts ( there different too!) for early 289 and early seventies 302.
Any radiator shop can change the outlet sides on the radiator for you. I've had it done several times.
i thought about switching the sides on the radiator but i will stillneed to make a custom lower hose so il just keep my radiator as is. il post pics when i get it all sorted out
You're better off with a driver's side outlet radiator, it'll cool a lot better than one that has both inlet and oulet on the same side. With one such as this, there's nothing to prevent the majority of coolant flow from nearly completely bypassing one half of the radiator, effectively killing the cooling capacity. There's a good reason Ford switched up the waterpump setup in 1970, same reason they revised the 86 timing covers for the reverse rotation pumps.
this is what i ended up doing. its kinda ghetto but theres plenty of room between the pulley and the pipe.
Looks OK to me. I don't see why u think it's Ghetto? That's a pretty engine. Is the rest of the engine bay that nice?
