ok the engine block i got is as rusty as i could possibly get so i was wondering if there is a dip or spray you could buy to get rid of all the rust thanks
I don't know of any good material to use at home, but if it's really that bad I'd take it to a machine shop that has a hot tank. It's the best way to clean it well!
If your not ready to build it yet, more than likely your not going to want to transport the block any more than you have to. If thats the case, get a few cans of PB blaster and spray it down then take a trash bag or two and wrap the block until your ready to start the build.
Just remember...If you get it steam cleaned/hot tanked. You must replace the cam bearings. The chemicles used for cleaning kill the cam bearings. Leave it rusty till you are ready to build it. Soak it, bag it, stuff it in the corner till the time comes.
When we used to hot tank the blocks, we'd pull the cam bearings out first. You should take out all the freeze plugs and gallery plugs too.
I know of several engine shops in my area that use Metal Rescue. They will submerge the block for 24 hours, all the rust is gone. I have seen it myself and it is amazing! It also works on body panels and other parts. http://www.metalrescue.com/home.aspx
