Today I looked at a 71 Maverick, 4 door, 200 ci, white with black interior, 72k original miles. Car is perfect. New paint, not a great job, but not bad. Body is about 99.5% perfect. Engine and compartment is spotless. I would say an 8 out of 10. Too nice for a daily driver, yet not nice enough to win a trophy. What's stopping me from buying it is that it's a 4 door. What do you guys think its worth? Starts right up, runs super smooth, and stops on a dime, or as close as it can with the 4 wheel drums. Help me out:confused:
Sounds like a good car. How much are they asking for it? I don't personally like the 4doors but others love em (Elliot)
It might have a nice new paint job.........covering up a whole lot of bondo...............you just never know. New Paint jobs scare me off quick.
I see your in N.J. ... if the car spent it's entire life there it's fairly unlikely to be a rust/rot free car ... Craig is right ... the only reason people paint a car and sell it quick is to get your money before the rust bubbles show up in the paint. Of course, there is a small chance the deal is legit ...
i got "spooked" by a new paint job in moultrie this weekend. the guy had an 82' truck, had owned it 6 mos. he did, new paint, tires, wheels, flowmaster ext. and had put a v8 in it. said he had a reman. auto. tranny. he would throw in if i bought it right then ..$3500...frank...
I'd do the Bondo check. Run a magnet along the body to see where it doesn't stick. You're right to be a bit apprehensive of a new paint job just before someone puts a car up for sale. As to it being a 4 door, the problem is????? Hey 71GOLD, $3500 for an '82 especially if it a 2wd is a lot. I bought a '91 4wd in decent shape last year for $4000 and it is still running like a new truck.
I think you just answered your own question. Do not buy a car to restore if it is really not what you what, even if it is a good deal. After you pour all that time and tons of money into it, you will still not be happy because it is not what you wanted in the first place. Then again, that is how to end up with 2 really nice cars!
You should do what you want to do NJ, And what's the problem with 4-doors, I think they are do some respect.
No disrespect against 4 doors. I have a 74 2 door and I found this and thought it would be cool to cruise around in while mine was laid up getting work done. It was just one of those things, it's everything I want in a Maverick, I just want a 2 door. Ther 4 doors are cool, hell, all Mavs are cool Put this one I looked at next to mine and I would pick the 4 door anyday! I did check out the usual spots and there was a patch made on the rear quarter and it was done the right way with cutting out the bad spot and welding in some new metal. Under the car was spotless and def not a clean up job. The guy is asking $3200. I mainly looked at it because I want the whole front clip off the car and the rear small bumper set up. I know the guy is selling the car cause he is moving to FL soon and needs to get rid of it. After looking at the car it's not the kinda car one should buy and use just for parts. I don't know. Prob better off just putting my cash into my 74. Wish I can find a 70-73 parts car...that would be nice And Elliot....relax man You're 4 door looks cool. Just not my style!
4 door Maverick: Closest thing to a classic Mustangish 4 door you'll ever get. Plus they are just plain cool! I love my 4 door, I use it everyday and it gets plenty of attention and respect from the rodders too. At the risk of sounding like a contradiction, I think the 2 and 4 door cars are very different but with familiar features that make them appealing to many of us. I like my 2 and 4 door but in different ways, I feel sporty and even musclecar like in a 2 door but like I am driving a classic family car in the 4 door. But I always feel like I am driving a Maverick.
To get vehicle values go to: nada.com It's free. It says a '71 Maverick 4 door has a low value of $1188, average $2494 and High value of $3800.00 with a 6 and A/C. It also says a standard 2 door is worth about the same and puts a grabber at almost $9000 with a 6 and A/C. add 20% for a V8 car.
