im looking for a bit more pep, i am putting an AOD in my 71 maveric, and currently it has the 3.3. i was thinking while its out i could swap the engine to a 289 (i dont want a 302, dont suggest it). then i started thinking, i could also turbo my 3.3 and rebuild the internals. i like the odd ball motors and i think it could be a quick little thing. i figure a turbod 3.3 will prolly be around the same as a 289 as far a 0-60 time goes, but which would be more fuel efficient? turbo 3.3/AOD or stock 289/AOD. thoughts and opinions on both performance and efficientcy would be greatly appreciated.
What's not to like about a 302??? I've had both over the years and in street versions you really can't tell them apart... Basically it's the same engine with .130" more stroke and a slightly shorter rod...
i just dont want a 302 becuase its like the 350 for chevy, over done, not as many people choose the 289
No, not unless it's a big bell version produced in the early '80s... The AOD fits 200(late), 240, 250, 300 I6, 3.8 & 4.2 V6, 289(6 bolt bell only), 302, 351W & C, and the rather rare early 400(most have the 429/460 pattern)... BTW I forgot, the early 4.6L that used AOD have the small block pattern(before mid '92), later versions that used AODE have a unique modular bell pattern... Bah, tell 'em it's a 289 no one would know the difference...
You got it, not going to fit a '71 200... If you want to stick with the 6cyl, you'll need to find a late 200 or any 250... The 240 & 300 are too long and tall to fit in a Mav... The tricky part of AOD install is be sure the TV cable is installed and calibrated correctly or it'll slip and burn up 3rd & OD in short order... There are two AODE, one fits small block the other the newer modular pattern... Of course you need a PCM or aftermarket controller to operate one...
I've seen several people on this forum with 300 sixes in their mavericks. The 300 is barely bigger than the 250. It supposedly fits using a mix of the V8 motor mounts and 250 motor mounts with a V8 belly bar. Then again you know everything so what's the point.
ok, so i suppose the discission has been made for me then, if im replacing the engine i may as well get the 289. the only question then is which year 289 will bolt to the AOD. is it any year? i found one that was out of a 66 mustang, would that one work?
Look closely at the bolt pattern for the trans on that engine block. There is a different pattern for early vs late 289s. I don't know when they made the change, but I suspect this will be an early pattern .... 289s first appeared in 1965.
