yes you can fabricate anything if you can, or have the $ to have it done, but it's a pointless mission, IMO. i looked into and AOD 3.3 combo... it wont work, from an mpg POV. how about a Gear Vender overdrive?? THe C4 tranny is a legend and the AOD is DOA spelled backwards, and the C4 has been a hit since it was introduced, and the AOD a fail with endless problems from day one. YEah they can be built to handle HP but you better be a tranny expert to make that happen. the 4.1 250 I6 WILL work because it takes the same bellhousing as the 302, which the AOD is for the 5.0 / 302. its a heavy tranny, btw. Also the 200 really doesnt have the spare HP to lose to the AOD to make it worth it. The 2-fitty may get worse mPG around town, driving the heavier AOD, and will dod better on the highway. I was intrigued with the 289... I thought "wow" a small V8... smooth little engine .. Then I found out it WEIGHS THE SAME as a 302.. So, not being an idiot, I trashed the 289 idea. And the 2 fitty gets worse mpg than the 200, and anout the same as a 302. THe 250 does do better at low rpm torque, which is good climbing hills... ok flame on...
so i am very far from an expert, so dont take this as critisizme, but as an honest question. my dad pt cruiser has les hp, less torque, and it weighs almost 1500lbs more, yet it can utilize a OD, so why not mine.
and AOD is the Ford overdrive transmission, and "Gear Venders" is a company that makes an overdrive that goes on the C4. http://www.gearvendors.com/hrford3s.html Dad's PT has a totally different drive train... I suggest you do as I did and spend afew hours reading all the threads here on aod's. Well its probably cheaper than what you are considering! AOD is HUGE.. you will have to modify your tranny tunnel...
what I really wish is for a non computer tranny with a lock up torque converter.. Like your Dad's PT cruiser. my buddy put a 5.0 metric mustang motor in his car with AOD... then a 2500 stall converter 'cause he wanted "pep" .. I said dude... when you shift into OD on the highway....1800 rpms..ur gonna be SMOKIN your T.Q. his eyes got wide and he doesnt drive it much..lol
ha, im sorry i guess i worded that poorly, i know what the physical differences were, and im familliar with gear vendors, i meant why would the gear vendor be different than the aod. though im not trying to change my tunnle, thats more of a project than i want, so i guess i dont have as much of an option as i thought i did...i suppose i could go to a 5 speed :/... sorry for all the questions, im only 20, and though ive had 7 other project cars and have some experience, i dont know much about transmissions and i rarely come accross people who know anything, so id like to pick your brain a bit if you dont mind. Best I can determine the zinc myth is all blown out of proportion, likely by peddlers of the additives... Yes zinc has been reduced to around 750-800ppm, but that is a similar figure that was used in the 60s & 70s oils... Also there are on the shelf oils out there with higher levels, such a Mobil 1 0W-40 with 1100ppm (use that in my supercharged Marauder), as well as the HD truck oils and many of the high mileage oils in xW-40 flavors... If you're running a .650 lift cam with 300Lb+ springs a zinc additive is no doubt a good idea, but probably not necessary with stock components ... Virtually every oil co have pds available on their web sites that list the amount of zinc in their oils... the point at which the torque converter "grabs" like.. if you are at a stop light and step on the brakes.. and then gas it up... it will rev to a certain rpm before it "bogs, stalls" that is the rpm ofthe TQ. I think stock is 1800 ??below that rpm, at stop lights and stop and go traffic, the tranny gets real hot. some racer dudes put high stall TQ's to get the rpm up for faster launching... The AOD does lock up in OD, but im concerned with his 2500 TQ at lower speeds.. non lock up TQ's generate more heat and are less efficient that lock up TQ's.. doesnt mean they are stronger Yeah... a 5 speed is THE answer for there is no slip in a manual tranny. But it is beyong my fabrication skills and I'm tired of my rip off mechanic.
ahh, that makes perfect sense now. what fabrication would go into that? a hole in the tunnel for stick to come through, bolt on a clutch bracket, bolt in the trans/clutch, hook up your linkages, anddddddd, thats all right?
