Its my understanding the early C4s (65/66) were called "cruise o matics" and later C4s were called "select shift" but i was looking to have a question answered if anyone knows for sure. Is the shift pattern for a cruise o matic effectively PRND2 with no manual first gear? If so, the manual lever on the transmission will only have 5 position vs 6 on the later units?
The Cruse-O-Matics were dual range Drive trans, or P,R,N,D1,D2,L... In D2 the trans started in 2nd then shifted to 3rd... In D1 it shifts through all gears & L is just that manual low(all had a manual low)... The cast iron automatics, early C4 & C6('66 only in big Ford/Merc) all used this setup... Just a matter of swapping to a PRND21 valve body from a '67(prob newer as well) trans to modify the shift pattern... EDIT There were 2-speed Ford-O-Matic trans in the early 60s that were basically a Powerglide that only had PRNDL... The three speed Ford-O-Matic was a '50s unit that had same quadrant but L was a manual 1st... In drive it started in 2nd and shifted to 3rd...
So basically the only difference in function is that in D2 it will shift in to 3rd whereas the later units will stay in 2nd when placed into 2?
