    Gotta Love 'em

This is to DJBerson. I agree 100%. Yesterday, I was at my Dad's shop, tapping my rocker stud holes, when a terrible ruckus approached outside. I looked at my dad with a curious look. He looked back with a mischevious smile. When I looked outside, there stood a real peach of a '71 Torino. Paint shot, surface rust and typical cancer. But who cares! Dad informed me that he had put together the strong cleveland that rested comfortably under the hood. It made me happy, and when he drove away, the not-so-mellow rumble put a smile on my face. LONG LIVE THE CLASSIC!!!:)

    Taking Bets

Okay. This was an interesting thread no doubt. I'm thrilled to se this much response to the topic. However, as many probably agree, you can only bash ricers so much. How 'bout this: Disregarding of my opinion toward ricers, and anyone elses for that matter, I want to hear everyone active on this thread place their bet, based on my descripion in my first post, on who will win if we race. No tempers, no bashing, just an honest and friendly debate. COMET  vs. PRELUDE:cry: Good luck men.

As far as sport compacts go, I just wish the "fart cans" had a better sound. They sound like mosquitoes on steroids.:(

I have a diffrent take on this one. Having worked in the lawn cutting buisness, I can say with out any doubt in my mind that "MOST" of the import ricer cars sound like weedeaters, you know the little hand held ones.

And yes I own a 1987 Nissan Maxima and almost a 1992 Honda civic..Gas is getting expensive, and at 3k miles a month, the Mav just won't cut it.

if they are both stock the prelude hands down.. even if the comets a 302

if its a I6 you might as well hide under a rock cuz the prelude will spank it! i own a 250 I6 and that thing is slow as hell! my wifes 1.8 is faster!

I went back and read your original post. Here are some intemperant thoughts:

    1. You didn't mention how the Prelude was equipped. Is it stock? Do you know what 1/4 mile times she runs? Better find out. Don't under estimate her car.

    2. You said you are keeping the 3:00 gear. She is going to spank you off the line and probably through the first 1/4 mile.

    3. Your stated set-up will allow you to beat her on top end speed, but I'm not sure you can do it in a 1/2 mile if she spanks you through the first quarter.

    4. If her Prelude can run a 14 sec quarter mile, you are burnt toast in that 1/2 mile race.

    5. Change that rear end gear and put on a set of headers.

I built a 289 to over 450 HP in 1976. I put it in the car before I changed rear ends. I had a C-4 and 3.00 gear in a '67 Fairlane. I took it out for a spin. There was no spin. It was slower in a 1/4 mile trot than when it was stock with 4-bbl and headers. I could hit over 115 mph in 2nd gear at around 6800 RPM. It was an ideal set-up for Bonneville.
Two weeks later, the car had a 9-inch posi with 4.56 gears and a 3000 stall converter. I had to go into third to hit 115 mph, but I was doing on 1/4 mile strip, not a 2 or 3 mile strip.

I'm sure there will be some to disagree, but I'm going by my experience. Bottom line: Hot engine ain't enough. You gotta have the whole package.

Cool, and let's not forget to mention that the 302 also puts out 234 ft-lbs. of torque. Now add a simple 4-barrel carb and a dual exhaust and you have even more than that. I guarantee that the 4-banger does not even come close to that torque figure and the race will be over before it can take advantage of its reving potential...:D I'm not slamming the 4-cylinder car. The newer ones kick @$$. I'm just saying that it was not a true comparison, as not all of the information was considered...

It all depends. You can own an import car and not be a ricer. Its the lack of performance upgrades to cheesy bodykit, neon light, and oversized racing sticker ratio that detirnines that. I was at your site, and the Subaru seems to have a "clean look". I don't remember if there were any performance mods listed, but I did see the Buzzcan in the back (1 point detdution for that one.) All and all though, I don't think I would lump you in with the Ricers yet.
Points can also be added if the purchase of the Subaru was for "economical" reasons, particualarly gas prices. I'm in the same boat in this case with my domestic rice 99 Plymouth Neon Expresso. I took the Mav off full time duty, got a Broncho II, working my way down to a Neon. I wouldn't be able to afford to run my Mav and work on it at the same time with today's gas prices. That little beater is teetering on the edge of riceness itself (factory neon green metalic paint, non functional rear wing, fog lights that don't really do anything, and the awsome POWER BULGE hood). So... If it's for the good fight, then I think you're in the clear. Plus it's something different than the Joe Everyone and his riced out Honda.
Bottom line, probably not a Ricer.

Speaking from past and present experience, your gears are a step up from my original 2:79 airplane gears that I was running on my Mav back when I still had the big bumpers, Compared to my 3:89s, both with a C4, the ladder with a stall converter and shift kit.
the 2:79's were a little slow off the start but it would almost idle at 65mph and would get upwards of 125+++ in the longer hauls (about 1/2 mile).
with the 3:89s get to 65mph pretty darn fast, but can't sustain more than about 75mph for any extended period of time. I've blown off many ricers light to light in my area, but on the highway I just pray that I blow them off in the first 1000 feet enough to intimidate them into backing off. but if we would get anywhere beyond a 1/4 mile I would reluctantly back my car down before it went blammo.
If she doesn't have a v6/turbo combo :bananaman I think your setup should have the upper hand.
ps. does she have a stick or an automatic?
:smash: ***Does not in any way endorse street racing, but playing around occasionally in short spurts is acceptable. My brother and my grudges have mostly been done at the strip, with the occasional "lets see what this did to the car" pre-strip testing.***
